wow. you still need 2 Macs to rescue your Mac from death. why cant they make it like Intel Macs ? Boot with a USB drive or something and re install?

your already in trouble if the SSD on the SOC goes bad. data gone forever.

Long live the External Hard Drives!
This isn’t about macos reinstallation. All T2 machines (including intel ones) have a DFU model similar to iphones for firmware-level recovery.
Like with an iphone, you need a second device to perform it.
I needed to use this feature personally on my intel macbook twice - first it was stuck in an infinite boot loop and second when I removed it from my icloud account but the computer had its activation lock status stuck on enabled even after multiple reinstalls.
Can’t really see how I’d do this with just a USB drive.

a computer shouldn't require another computer to

Older Intel Macs can be fixed on its own with the Firmware Recovery Disc. Windows PCs can also self recover from BIOS update failures using a flash drive

I hope this isn't a sign of Configurator being deprecated as its most used feature is moved into Finder, a la iTunes.

I don't think so, at least not in the immediate future. AC2 still has way more features than Finder. Plus Apple has announced that Shortcuts will be supporting cfgutil in macOS 15. I can't wait to build some workflows for quick restores.
