It's a good way to get my entire Macbook screen reflected brightly in my reading glasses 😁

It can also be activated manually (hence also turned off if required) which I think I'm going to prefer anyway, so those with older Macs at least can toggle it manually too.

I like it! (I take my glasses off when actually on a call.)

Same here, and macOS/iOS 26 made FaceTime even more unusable. Half the time I call, it goes into the "calling" screen but doesn't actually call, so I have to initiate it on my iPhone or iPad first then handoff. But of course, handoff usually works half the time, and restarting never fixes it. When it does work, it works great, but it seems now with every update it's less and less which is a shame because it's such a core feature.

Zoom/Teams (never used Google Meetings) have had 0 issues between work, school, personal appointments since I first started using it during COVID 5 years ago.
Exactly.

Usually the problem is Facetime starts on my colleagues/clients/family members iphone and not on their mac. And when we try to transfer it to their Mac, it never works for a variety of reasons.

And screensharing used to be so much more efficient when done directly through imessage. Now, with so much propensity for misaligned configurations, it's a crap shoot.

Maybe they can make it work independently of the chat platform. There really isn’t any reason not to have it work that way. The AI isn’t actually talking to facetime, it’s all local just analyzing the room and the subject and making adjustments.
It does (or at least it will) - emphasis mine
The second beta of macOS 26.2 introduces a new Edge Light feature that's designed for video calls on FaceTime and other video calling platforms.

I generally love FaceTime. But 50% of the time when I try to share my desktop on the MacBook during a FaceTime call…. Everything freezes up horribly!!!!! I wish they would fix that by now it’s been going on for like a year

Anyone can test this just by opening up the camera using the Photo Booth app.

I think this is the first time I've used this app in years; and the previous time was to also check out some camera function on my laptop 😁

How about that. Opening a blank white image in Preview is being Sherlocked.

(Whence this image from the article?)

On Macs? With various people with mutliple apple devices like Ipads and Iphones on different OS's? With screensharing?
You just answered your problem. Different versions of FaceTime in communication will have issues in groups. Zoom requires the same version (latest) installed.

Pay attention to the requirements minimum. Now, think which versions of iOS iPadOS, macOS, etc., are trying to interconnection and which versions will not have the necessary frameworks to achieve what you want.

Will try it out as soon as possible. Might improve video quality. Turning on automatically might be beneficial. Nice that it works for external webcams too.

"The feature is available on Macs that support Apple silicon" - I don't see it on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro ?

Does anyone what "other video calling platforms" this feature works in? All by default? Or does the dev need to add support for it?

I use MS Teams daily. So just wondering if it will work out of the box, or if Microsoft needs to add support it (i.e. it will never come)

I haven't actually seen anyone mention that the lighting of the woman's face looks bloody awful in the screenshot, not to mention her eyes.
Going from bad to worse.

That’s a smart use of the (XDR) display during calls, I must admit.
But ain’t it weird this is a .x update feature? I see why Night Shift took some more time and was only introduced in iOS 9.3, but this? This would have been a great feature to showcase during WWDC.

Can’t possibly imagine why the ambient light detection feature is limited to 2024 & later Macs given these sensors have been on them for ages. Could it be more Tim Apple planned obsolescence? 🤔
That’s such BS. You’re absolutely right. I can’t imagine they reworked the sensor so significantly since the M1 Pro/Max debut they can’t possibly enable this on anything released before 2024.

Edit: I think it’s because of the neural engines/image processing, only being efficient enough not to cause a drop in performance or battery life on newer Mac’s. But still, I think my upgraded M1 Pro should handle analyzing ambient light and adjust the (display) brightness accordingly, like it always did…
