Hi there. I have a 20TB 5Big thunderbolt 2 drive that I partioned as follows: 12 TB as a RAID and the remaining 8TB as backup mirrored (4+4) and that worked nicely with my older Mac mini 2014. I just got a m1 mac mini running ventura 13.2 and I tried connecting my 5big Thunderbolt 2 to it (using the Thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter) but it won't mount. The M1 can't see the raid configuration. I tried installing the Lacie raid manager v2 (Version 2.9.4.295) for silicon and asked me to alter security settings and I did but I think there is a compatibility issue with Ventura 13.2 because after some re-starts the Lacie Raid manager won't show on the desktop at all...It would be great if I could use it with my new M1 mac mini.My 20TB was nice. I tested a 5big thunderbolt 1 (No RAID) with the M1 and it shows up just fine but that's it just a bunch of drives together. Do I have to buy a newer Lacie drive to have a similar set up? Raid made them a little faster
thanks

I can't access any USB drives and SD card in USB card reader after the update in my iMac Pro. The devices appear in System Information -> USB but not showing their file systems. I can't even see the devices in Finder nor Diskutil.
Same issue on a iMac 2015. Can’t see external drives after update. However, I can see them in safe mode. Help!

Base on what I and others have experienced, you probably have a kext loaded which interacts with USB devices. If you can discover which, removing (or updating) the kext is a solution. Download KextViewr, install and run it. What does it show?

I can see the jmPeripheralDevice extension that I have seen mentioned. But I'm not certain what is the next step to disallow it, turn it off, etc. So it allows my TM to be seen.

I'm a newbie at the terminal, but following the sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/jmPeripheralDevice.kext removed it. I rebooted and the .kext is gone and external drives are fully functional and operational. :)

I assume a kext is a kernel extension. How do the bad ones land in a system? Any popular software could be the culprit? Viruses? Or just old drivers that are incompatible with Ventura?

This! and yes, kext = kernel extension.

The current jmPeripheralDevice.kext and old SATSMARTdriver.kext are the two examples found in this thread. Both have to do with getting information from the USB device which is not available in any other way via macOS. Nothing nefarious.

Yes, it's a Shocker!

My MBP Ventura 13.2 can now read my SD cards and my thumb drives.

I did not remove this file, I just put an x in front of the name. xjmPeripheralDevice.kext

Restarted, I am now back to 13.1 - in this regard - only. AFAIK

This kext seems to be the Ventura killer.

I do not know who TheresAShocker is, but I love you.

Can you go into /Library/Extensions and see if you have a file called jmPeripheralDevice.kext
I moved this to the desktop, restarted and everything worked again. I still have the file in case I find it actually broke anything… but 2 days later I haven’t noticed anything awry.

This is amazing. I have had the issue for over a year. I believe it started with me with Monterrey over a year ago. I have had numerous sessions with Apple Support and it was never resolved. Simply renaming by adding an x, xjmPeripheralDevice.kext, has solved the issue immediately. I am sooooooo happy! I LOVE these forums!

The Ventura 13.2 problem not reading SD cards, thumb drives, optical drives, etc...

It makes me wonder - who are the Ventura OS Beta testers/engineers? Are any of them over the age of 21?

I do not think that any of them use SD cards, thumb drives, optical drives. They do not own a real camera that uses SD cards. I just used a thumb drive to update the Garmin Nav data in my Honda Pilot. If any of these kids owned them, they would/should have discovered the problem, before the release of 13.2.

And for Apple Support to go this long without giving us a (easy) solution for this problem - just completely amazes me. They seem to no longer care about the 'old' hardware that so many of us still use.

Children are now running the Apple Ventura Beta program. Am I going to believe in the next version of Ventura that the kids proffer up for us?

^^^^^WOW - Just WOW - I'm WAY over 21 at 84😱 I'm on a NcMP 7,1 and NEVER and still DON'T have that issue. I use all the external drives you mentioned in your caustic post. I also burn external discs in my burner. The only REAL issue that is not yet solved is Pioneer devices not being recognized, and Pioneer is working that problem. The other issues, AFAIK, involve a kext snd that is easily remedied.

WOW - Lou, I'm very happy that you are a happy camper. I have no idea what a NcMP 7 is. Is it running Ventura 13.2? Good Luck with your REAL issue. The kids are working on it, too. Thank You for your caustic post.

^^^^I'm sure someone here will tell you want a NcMP 7,1 is 1387914497.gif Or you could always look it up😱

A Yes, I ran all the Ventura Betas, except the first two. And another Yes, I'm currently on 13.2👍🏼

Lou.
When did you know, that the kext issue was easily remedied? And if you knew how to fix this issue, why didn't you share your solution to the SD, thumb drive issue on this forum? ASAP?

Most likely, she means all the betas (except the first two) of 13.0. Like a lot of people.

She didn't say she had a Pioneer. Just that this was the only unresolved issue (i.e. without a workaround).

If you remember, back on 16th Jan she said that she did not have any issues with her burners and external drives.
Still waiting.......
Being, even mildly, aggressive doesn't help anyone.

Gilby, do you understand the gravity of this apple screw-up as I do? If Microsoft did the same thing to their users, there would be more than a few 'mildly aggressive' comments. No SD cards or thumb drives for you. Say what!!

I've had software that did not work again, after a mac OS upgrade. I understood what it was all about and why, because I used to be a software developer. This 13.2 fiasco affects a lot of people and their livelihood. $$$$

I am more than mildly pissed off right now. I trusted apple. Now, not so much.

Same here.

Didn't need any remedy. They all just worked when I upgraded from Monterey to 13.2.

Well this fix worked until I left Ventura 13.1. Now that I have uploaded Ventura 13.2.1 the problem is back even with the same files commented out. Drat!
