After ruling out startup items and system extensions, my next thought is it has something to do with the Accessory Security settings. However, that should only affect Apple Silicon systems, not Intel Macs.

Really appreciate your suggestions to get to the bottom of this. Tried the tccutil reset on my M1 Mac mini - the system came back with a success message.
Unfortunately the USB devices are still not recognized.

They show up in the system information though:

I suspect this might have to do with the menu item 'Allow accessories to connect' not showing under System Settings => Privacy & Security even after the successful tccutil reset.

Thanks for trying it out and reporting back. I don't know what else to suggest or why 'Allow accessories to connect' doesn't show on your mini.

As the G-Drive is visible in System Info, is it visible in Disk Utility as well? You may need to use View -> Show All Devices

Thanks again. No, nothing shows up in Disk Utility besides the built-in SSD.

I'll try to escalate this with Apple Support.

That's really strange. The only other thing I can suggest you try, if you have a spare external SSD, is download the full 13.2 installer, install a clean copy of Ventura on the external and see what happens when you boot from that.

Another thought:

Check the fsck logs in /var/log. Perhaps it is trying to do a disk check on the GDrive but it is getting stuck. You can go to that folder via Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder.

13.2 seems to have been withdrawn. I'm still on 13.1 and being told it is the latest version after previously receiving a new updates available message.

Edit: It's back now

Did it automatically show up? Because I'm still being told I'm on the latest version...

Notification came up at the start of the week with the .2 release. I was always going to wait until the end of the month to install (my convenience rather than caution), but had been reading the forums for problems.

Anyway, when I opened settings this morning the notification was there but then it refreshed to say 13.1 (my current install) was the latest version - hence posting it seems to have been withdrawn.

Not long after the .2 availability reappeared, but System Settings doesn't give any info on the build number.

I imagine if a new build had been released there'd be more public comment on it by now so guessing my suspicion was unfounded

I have the same issue as reported here: and I think it is somehow a Thunderbolt problem. I have two Thunderbolt USB-C hubs, one is connected permanently to my iMac M1, with a bunch of USB drives hanging off it, but with a built-in SSD. The SSD is visible, as is a Samsung EVO 970 in a Thunderbolt enclosure, but NONE of the USB drives that are attached to the hub. I tried using the other hub I have, same thing. In safe mode, everything is visible and accessible. I have tried reinstalling Ventura 13.2 to no avail, I have disconnected startup items, my happy configurations are now in disarray while I wait for Apple to come up with a fix. Does not look like anyone else here has had success? Is there a way to roll back to 13.1 if you don't have Time Machine?

Having the same problem as others. On my Mac Studio most of my external drives show, they are connected in a Qnap TR4 expansion box and are working fine. Any other drives that I connect do not show or mount.

I also do not have the section asking for accessories to connect and no message appears.

Tried the same drives with my M1 Macbook pro and that section is in the System Settings and it asks for permission to connect the device. Drives mount fine on the M1 Macbook pro.

I would try a reinstall of 13.2 but I don't know how you get the standalone installer.

I upgraded to Ventura 13.2 a couple days ago. 16" Intel MBP from 2019 and a Pioneer BDR-XD05S external blu-ray/DVD drive. It worked flawlessly in Ventura 13.1. Tested CD, DVD, and Blu-ray. None appeared, although the System Report does see the drive. I submitted a report to Feedback Report, but would love any additional insight. I swapped cables, usb-a to c adapters, reset SMC, etc. Works fine under Windows Bootcamp partition. Thanks.
Just want to report, I have this exact same BD drive, works fine for me on 13.2 on my MBP (M2)
Also no issues with my external seagate drive used for time machine, or any USB thumb drives.
Hopefully this can help diagnose the issue, or at least narrow down some possibilities.

I'm not super-technical, but if there's anything I can check or post to help troubleshoot, let me know.

Oof. Thanks for reporting. I wouldn't know what to check, but if someone else has an idea, I'd be happy to look to try and shed some light on this.

I am not having any issues with hard drives or other USB peripherals (my mouse and keyboard are running through a switcher, and I am outputting to an Apple Studio Display). Over on Apple Discussions, I've seen a handful of folks having optical drive issues with a slew of different drives (including the XD05S).

One thing I just thought of... I know that the BD drive doesn't function unless it has sufficient power.
Once using the supplied cable, I accidentally plugged in the wrong USB plug, and the drive turned on, but wouldn't read any discs due to not enough power.
Now I'm using a micro-b to usb-c cable because I don't want to mess with the dual-plug or dongles.

Maybe you're having a similar issue?
That's the limit of my knowledge though 😅

I'm also using a micro-b to usb-c cable for the same reason, and the drive powers on and spins up in Ventura 13.2, just no acknowledgement of the media in the drive. I did test a 2nd micro-b to usb-c cable, as well as a micro-b to usb-a with usb-a to c adapter yesterday just to be sure it wasn't the cable.

I have a Bootcamp partition installed and when I boot the MBP into Windows, the drive operates as expected.

Does anyone know where I can download Ventura 13.1 and install it over 13.2?
I would assume you could go here and follow the instructions for "downgrading" to 13.1

Also, as my info shows, I am a newbie to Macos. But when I built Windows computers and had a hardware problem, I would go into "Device manager", delete the hardware and reboot and it would reconfigure. Is there any way to do that on a MacOs? Just a thought and I apologize if this is known not to work.

You can't install an old version 'over' a newer version. This is because the old version when it was released didn't know about changes that the future version might make. You will need to erase the disk, install 13.1 and recover files, apps and settings from your most recent Time Machine (or whatever you use) backup.

I can answer this one--there is sufficient power for the drive.

See discussion in the Apple Community here. Short version is that it works from within a MacOS 13.1 VM on the same box. Windows 10 VM as well.

I downloaded it but it says I can't downgrade so there must be minor variations in versions. Have to wait for Apple to fix the mess I guess. Will try creating a USB Installer and hope it gets detected before being shut down.
See my post just above yours. You can never downgrade without erasing the disk and reinstalling.

I mentioned this detail about the VM in my support call with Apple, but if you haven't already I would recommend giving them a call so have documentation of this at the source. On my end, I told them my Windows Bootcamp partition works with the optical drive as expected.

Temporary Solution to try. On my Mac Studio M1 Max I was having the problem that others are with 13.2 update. Most external devices did not show, including USB sticks, USB SSd drives and BlueRay drive. I booted into recovery mode and reinstalled Ventura. No change, drives still not showing and no option to allow accessories to run in Privacy and Security.

Booted up again into recovery mode and checked the Startup drive security settings. They were set to allow booting from non Apple devices. Returned this setting to full security and rebooted.

All external devices show and function, including my Time Machine.

Option on the Privacy and Security settings is still missing but the drives work. Can't boot from any external drives at the moment but it may help someone else. Did not try my camera SD cards during this time but I suspect they would not have shown either.

So I called Apple support about this today. The "support" person - very polite, etc. - did not even know that you cannot boot an M1 into recovery with the shift+control+option+R sequence anymore. Very disconcerting. She then told me that I could downgrade to 13.1, and emailed me a link (which turned out to be 13.2) and ask me to do a survey. Yeah, right ...

That worked! I can see my drives now in normal mode ... however a bunch of utilities that I had installed that wanted access to system calls are now disabled. Thanks for the info!
