The new macOS Ventura software that was introduced today is compatible with many of the Macs that were able to run macOS Monterey, but it does drop support for some Mac models from 2014 through 2016, according to Apple's webpage for the update.

A full compatibility list is below:

  • iMac (2017 and later)
  • iMac Pro
  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)
  • Mac mini (2018 and later)
  • MacBook (2017 and later)

These are the Macs that were compatible with macOS Monterey:

  • iMac - Late 2015 and later
  • iMac Pro - 2017 and later
  • MacBook Air - Early 2015 and later
  • MacBook Pro - Early 2015 and later
  • Mac Pro - Late 2013 and later
  • Mac mini - Late 2014 and later
  • MacBook - Early 2016 and later

macOS 13 Ventura is available to developers as of today, with Apple planning to provide a public beta in July.

Wow this is pretty crazy dropping THREE years off the compatibility list at one time. I mean all the 2015 Macs in my household are either on Catalina or Big Sur but they could run Monterey if need be.

I wonder how Ventura will perform on a 2017 iMac 4K? Probably not as nicely as on an Apple Silicon I bet.

Surprised that the 2013 Mac Pro isn't supported considering they were still selling it in 2019. Not a big deal to me since I haven't even upgraded to Monterey yet but still surprising. I'm guessing not a lot of sales in 2018-2019 makes it acceptable?

“MacBook (2017 and later)”. There is no model after that, though.

I wonder if maybe a new MacBook to replace the $999 MacBook Air will launch next year? Perhaps that will be the colorful and white bezel model?

Im not happy about this move, I had my mid 2014 MacBook Pro for 7 years before they dropped support. It seems now you'll be pressed to get 5 years of updates out of your Macs and MacBooks. It's not like Ventura was a big update, it was pretty minor if you ask me.

Heck at this rate my 2020 M1 MacBook air might be on the chopping block next year if this continues.

I'm sad. They dropped support for my MacBook Pro with Touch Bar from 2016. Why Apple? Why? 😭
It looks like they are taking a fast-track to obsolete Intel Macs. I think we can make some assumptions about how long Intel Macs will be supported from this. I wouldn't be surprised now if no Intel Macs are upgradable to the MacOS 14. Certainly no Intel Mac will get MacOS 15.
