My macbook pro harddrive recently crashed, I used a time machine restore but when I now try to use macports I can't self update. I used the verbose command and it seems that my C compiler is not working, I was using the gcc compiler that comes with xCode, does this not get restored from time machine? Do I need to reinstall xCode? Would appreciate any help I could get, many thanks

You could always "buy" the latest Xcode free in the app store if all you need is GCC. Also take a look at the /Developer folder and see if gcc is sitting there in a bin directory only that particular bin directory isn't added to your path. Of course you'll also need paths for standard include files such as stdio.h, cocoa.h, etc. This is why I suggest getting Xcode over again in the app store. While there is a multi gigabyte download involved, it might be the quickest way to set up a working build environment.
