That'll keep everything quiet and cool :)

Wait does that have air holes though.. dont want to suffocate the precious!!

I've measured the decibels of a 2.26GHz 8-core Mac Pro with GeForce 120 GT and 2.93GHz 8-core with Radeon HD 4870.

At 6 inches from the rear fan, they both measure 60 dB using the Decibel app in the iPhone. At 3 feet, the level drops to 45 dB. The rear CPU bay fan is louder than either card. And, unlike the Radeon HD 3870, the 4870 does not rev up when put under a load.

 45 dBA at 3 feet..that is loud! Considering the iMac is about 20 dBA. An average quiet bedroom in a house (daytime) has an ambient signature of about 22 dBA, so the new Mac Pros must definitely be way above background levels. Those extra fans in the heatsinks won't make things any quieter either.

Good thing I didn't buy one. Whew.

I don't know how much I'd trust an iPhone app to accurately measure decibel levels. I'd be much more interested to see what a real decibel measuring tool says. Looking into comparisons, 60 dB is as loud as a sewing machine or normal conversation. That's pretty loud, and people here have been saying that they are pretty quiet. If it were really pumping out 60 dB at the noise source, I think we'd be hearing a LOT of complaints.

45 dBA.... that can't be right. I guess we will have to wait until proper reviews come with some more detailed numbers. That and idle power consumption, that is what I am waiting for.

Good to know that the 4870 does not rev up under load, anyway!

Can't hear it over my G5

I have the new 2009 2x2.26 across from my 2004 1x1.8 G5. I have to put my ear to the MP to even hear anything over the G5. Even while play ESPN360 with 5 video feeds! Can't wait to load up X-Plane!

You didn't buy it for gaming, did you??

Could you tell us what it's like with the G5 turned off?

I actually had a 1x1.8 G5 back in the day. I was then using one similar case to the one mentioned in this thread (around 15 dB reduction), but then I moved and threw the case away (silly me!). The 1x1.8 G5 without case was annoying so I ended up selling it.

Please, could you switch the G5 off and tell how the noises compare? Thanks! :D

Hey Tallest Skil,

I thought that (at least in previous versions) that you cannot use both an ATI and an Nvidia card at the same time in a Mac Pro, at least under OSX? That's why you can't mix them on the BTO page?

No, not at all. OS X is perfectly fine with mixed manufacturer cards.

Windows XP is also fine with them, as is Windows 7.

Vista, on the other hand... Ugh... don't even try it.

According to our inline watt meter, idle power consumption is 139 watts on the 2.26GHz 8-core with GT 120 GT.
It's 176 watts with the 2.93GHz 8-core with Radeon HD 4870.

Compare that to the 2008 3.2GHz 8-core with GeForce 8800 GT at 207 watts
and the 2007 Clovertown 3.0GHz 8-core with Radeon X1900 XT at 274 watts.

That looks Bad A$$!!

Is this yours? How many fans, what size, and where are they located on the enclosure??

Not mine I'm afraid, the price is way beyond my budget for what I do at home (£1800, same price as a new mac pro ), I'd love to get one though.

I've seen them in a couple of recording studios and they emit no discernible noise at all, they are cooled by some fans at the back, but the real plus with them is that they are like having a machine room in a rack enclosure, and keep the noise of equipment down, they claim to have 20Bd+ of noise reduction.

As for size, I think they start at 12U and go higher.

How do these compare with past models? Apart from your measurements, do they seem noisy to you? Lloyd mentions an "annoying drone" that comes and goes with the GT120.

How much of that difference would you attribute to the different graphics cards?
