The Mac Pro is currently $2899 in Canada. With the change in currency values, and the increase in part costs, the price will go over $3000.

The psychological affect of that will be horrible because it seems like a lot more even though it is not. I have a feeling that a >$3000 Mac Pro will not sell well compared to a <$2900 Mac Pro.

Thanks. :)

Defininitely sqeezed in there. :p Just over 2" thick, and just under 12 lbs. 1 hr battery life. ;)

Yikes. I'm not even sure I'd want to see the price. :D :p

What's really interesting about it is it's supposed market - it's literally designed to be a mobile server (If you didn't read much of the article). The 1 hour of battery life seems strange. Why would 1 hour be useful for that application? Why is a battery needed at all when this thing obviously needs a new power source in 59 minutes?

I didn't really see it as a server. Portable workstation, OTOH, is a nice idea, but the battery life is too short for that as well. :( I doubt many could even get an entire airline flight out of it, unless it's a short one. :p

"Attention passengers, Flight 314 from Philadelphia International to... Philadelphia International (?) is now (??) boarding..."

Exactly. Pretty much no matter what Apple does, the prices will sky rocket down here, which is why I just bought the current Mac Pro last week :)

A very good point. I'm in the UK and have been waiting patiently but having done a quick sum, if Apple was to keep prices the same in $US and make the £UK prices as per current exchange rate there would be a jump of something like £500 ($700)!!

I'm now in a quandary - wait for new supa-dupa Mac Pro and find I can't afford it or buy ancient existing Mac Pro and then deeply regret it when a couple of weeks later new supa-dupa Mac Pro comes out and Apple keep the prices down so I could have afforded it?!:confused::confused::confused:

Expect a £1,999 price, if we are lucky it will be £1,956 due to the VAT rate.

I question if I even need dual. I wonder if it would make more sense to get a single Xeon and add a 15K drive instead.

I've got an intel P4 EE and it runs everything fine....Wouldn't a Xeon +15k drive result in more overall system power than dual Xeon and a 7200?

HDD throughput, Yes. Raw CPU power, No.

If you don't need the extra CPU performance, the singe CPU and better HDD throughput would likely suit your needs. You'd definitely notice the improved drive performance. :)

Can you ADD another Xeon later? Well I can only go from what I have right now...a P4EE in the desktop seems fine for power and the MBPRO Penryn is great...so a Xeon should do it. The 15K drive should be faster than my raptor RAID 0 config since they are 5 years old.

Yeah you technically can. You can get an off the shelf Intel Xeon processor and install it but if I'm not mistaken, and others can correct me, you need the Apple Mac Pro heatsink, not a pain to find but regular off the shelf LGA771/775 heatsinks don't fit properly.

What does that have to do with anything? I was just saying that if using the same logic board across the same line was so cost effective, they could have just put the 20" iMac board in the 24" and call it a day. I mean the specs are the same except for some minor things like a MXM slot. But they decided to add some value to the 24" and make a completely different logic board for the 24".

And Xeon X3500 will work in current i7 motherboards.

Yayyy!!! Intel Xeons in the new iMacs!!! 8-core iMacs, everyone!! :D :D :D

/sarcasm

Yes, you can add it later.

It's more expensive though. Apple charges $500 for both the chip and cooler. You can't even touch the chip for that ATM. If you're sure you'll need it before having to replace the machine, best to get it when you buy it.

I found the coolers at macpalace.com. The price was $102.60 USD, IIRC. Not exactly inexpensive.

That is cheap for a Xeon cooler. And it's insanely cheap for a Mac Pro cooler. We're talking about a $2300+ workstation. That is chump change for people who can afford to buy one. I would have thought at least $200. Nice find!

I was thinking in terms of a good aftermarket unit, such as the Noctua NF-12P or Thermalright Ultra 120. Slightly less expensive, ~$15 - 20 USD. You could think of it as free shipping. :p

As for a MP part, no, it isn't bad. :D Especially when compared to ~$800 USD for a logic board. ;)

Very true!!

Too bad Apple isn't offering a nice % discount knowing the new ones are coming soon.

A question for the OP:

Have you checked to see which discounts you may be able to receive? Student? Business? Developer? Have you looked into possible tax credits you can get for buying a server class computer?

The discount that I'll receive brings this machine into reach for me.
