Yes, sometimes. There's a site I visit named lowendmac.com which lists new, refurb, and used deals on Apple every week. Then there are a couple small discounters like SmallDog and PowerMax that sell refurbs fairly often, and they don't charge sales tax. I got my last PBG4 from SmallDog and the one before it from PowerMax. Not only are the prices better, but the service is good too and they will sell RAM at reasonable prices.

Tristan and fellow Mac Users: I have purchased a refurbished 20 inch 2.16 ghz IMAC for "1,347.97 cents" I thought about what everyone said and I decided that Apple's refurbished computers are a really great deal. I figure it's fast enough and it's affordable for me. I couldn't bring myself in purchasing a heavy duty professional model like the MacPro.

I weighed all the options and realized this is a great deal for a fairly new computer. Granted it's not the newest model or the most loaded computer. But it's midrange high quality computer and I figure 20 inch monitor is plenty for my residence. I didn't want to have to pay in blood.

I want to thank everyone who helped me in this decision and weighed my options. I realized once again a computer is a computer. It doesn't limit you creatively if you don't have Twice the amount of gigabyte as everyone.

I think now I have to decide on AppleSupport which I will purchase in a month or so.

Now I have to do the daunting task of taking all bookmarks and saving them. Because this hard drive is really infected with spyware in the applications. So I am just going to take the bookmarks and the music with me I think.

5 years later after getting this p.c. and the P.C. dynasty I feel is done. I've been on P.C.'s since 1992. Now let's consider one thing. I was a P.C. user for life. Before that I had Apple II C computer. I have only used Mac for 2 minutes and that was enough for me. I don't use that many Windows applications. And P.C. has just made too many wrong choices.

If this isn't a sign of the tide turning, I don't know what is. For me not to go to P.c. it has to be a few good reasons. And those reasons are

1) Vista has too many security holes

2) I can't trust Vista's reliability

3) The Spyware is out of control

4) The sites I surf on have mucho spyware and viruses

5) Nobody uses that many applications. And I have a feeling that this kind of burden on your computer slows it down immensely on a P.C. It's just ridiculous and I feel it's just going to get worse as time progresses.

My only concern is application like "RAR" I hear stuffit software takes care of that. Applications like this concern me because I download alot of media and I hope it all converts fairly well.

So, Apple has done wonderous things. I can only hope I don't have a bad beginning introduction with my IMAC. I will keep people posted on the first few weeks. Thanks again to those who shared their input. And Macpro users no hard feelings, I just can't make a committment of that much money. And without financial assistance (because I only have a debit/credit card) this is the road I must travel. I do hope that the IMAC 2.33 ghz doesn't make that much of a difference than mine. So the decision was made and I realized I better just get the machine because who knows when another refurbished IMAC is going to be up at a particular time on the Apple site. I might just miss it when I am asleep.

Thanks again Mac community :p :D

Cool! You'll love your iMac, and it sounds like a great deal. I get Applecare for notebooks, but I'm not sure if you need it for an iMac. You can buy it within a year of your purchase date, so make the decision later.

There are lots of switchers on this forum BTW, you're right at home. I switched in early 2003 when I opened up my Dell Inspiron notebook one day and it SNAPPED IN HALF. WTF? And that had replaced the Dell notebook that used to shock me! Seriously, it would zap me with electricity when I tried to remove the power cable. The Apple product & service quality is just so much better. I'm always more productive on a mac, even if I'm just writing an email, and pretty much everyone I talk to has the same experience, especially those in the creative fields (writing, media, etc).

Macbookpro- I hear the hard drive is a bit slower. True or not? The battery life is eh too.

Oh, and the Battery life on the Mac Pro and the iMac is just ASTOUNDING isnt it???

Oh yes, and congratulations on the iMac --- you will LOVE IT! :D

What's the best program for Winrar? I need to get the best converter because this format I will never escape. Everyone and their mama uses it.

Is the IMAC that reliable that I won't need Applecare? Wow that is impressive.

2 questions

1) How does IMAC defrag it's hard drive? And if it doesn't what does it exactly do to

2) Does it automatically update?

3. What is the best online internet service to use for Apple, in your opinion?
I have Verizon and my issue with that is DSL is slipping on the transfer rate when it comes to video like avi's and what not. Will I see a difference with a IMAC when it comes to Verizon? I may have to switch providers.

Thanks for the quick responses to my inqueries. I think I like my salesperson. Is that a no no to Apple to call her? I told her that "Since Apple may be listening to this call give her a raise" :D "This call may be monitored" :( :p

Hey, I can't be the only one! :p :p I didn't get her number but I got her extension. :p :p

RAR: I use UnRARX. There may be others. There's a lot of cross-platform software available for Linux and MAC.

Defrag: You don't defrag your own HD with macs. It does it every once in a while when you're installing software, updates, etc.

Automatically update: Well, Software Update shows up once a week, checks for updates, and then asks you if you want to download them and install them.

Internet service: Makes no difference.

Reliability/Applecare:
I didn't say Apple's don't break down, just that overall build quality is better. The difference between driving a Porsche and a Ford. Both cars can still break down on you, but you can tell which one is built better.

New Apple models are notorious for having problems, but those usually fail well inside the warranty period and get replaced quickly. It's still a hassle though and that's why a lot of people say "never buy Rev. A". Your iMac has been selling long enough that any early revision problems were taken care of long ago.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about Applecare right now, you have 11 months to think about it and buy it. During that time, you can keep track of other people's experiences in the model and see if there are any "known" defects you want to insure yourself against.

Well, here's an update. I have yet to receive my IMAC. It shipped Saturday. I had a feeling it would take more days than they thought it would.

Let you know what I think of it when I get it.

Last time I bought from Apple was in 2001 and I returned all the products because I got cold feet.
For those who care there's another IMAC of the same specifications for that amount.

I still need to do cleaning on my computer and moving bookmarks. What procrastination I have....

Here's an update:

I received my IMAC today :D Everything looks good in the package however this mouse doesn't look up to par. Would I be safe to assume this mouse was cheaply made? Don't get riled up on that assumption I am just wondering.

I have to clean up my place and my computer before I take it out for a spin later this week. One thing i'd like to ask is I am looking for a screen protector for a 20" Inch. Which one would you reccomend? I am looking at a Exim screen protector.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice thus far. :p

P.S. I will give you a perspective of what I think of the first time using a IMAC.
