    Hey guys,

I've followed MR for years, and this is my first post. I'm kind of at my wit's end with trying to find the source of these kernel panics though the MR forums and my own troubleshooting.

I've got a Mac Pro 1,1 that I upgraded to dual 3.0 X5365's back in June 2011; the problem started not long after, though I'm not sure if that means bad CPUs or a compatibility issue, or if I threw something out of whack when operating. My machine has 19GB of 667 Mhz RAM and 9.5TB of storage on 5 HDDs (one in the second optical bay).

I've played around with updating and uninstalling the Kexts listed below. Removed VirtualBox, updated Logitech to the Lion-supported drivers. Also have tried removing all peripherals with no luck either.

I monitored temps for a while, particularly on the CPUs. They would occasionally hit 108° or 110°F, but going above a certain temp didn't seem to correspond to a kernel panic: it sometimes crashes with the CPUs registered at 86°F

Also tried reinstalling the OS, as well as downgrading to Snow Leopard. Same effect.

I've run the extended Apple Hardware test twice with no issues reported.

All fans seem to be running at proper speeds; none are registering 0RPM on iStat Pro or SMC FanControl.

The kernel panics show no consistency... it could be after 3 days of sitting idle, 45 minutes of heavy Logic Pro activity, or after days of heavy activity with no issue.

The BSD process name seems to be different every time: WindowServer; Chrome; Logic Pro, etc.

When I initially installed the CPUs, the step size was in the wrong order between the A and B slots, but I later fixed that and the machine seemed to be fine.

Am I overloading the power supply? Are [one of] the CPUs no good? I seem to recall reading about a compatibility issue with the original MacPro1,1 graphics card and newer CPUs, but don't remember details. I have the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB, but would love an excuse to upgrade to the FCPX-compatible Radeon HD 5770.

Does an experienced reader spot anything below I've missed?

I would really appreciate your help!

I did the very same upgrade to my Mac Pro 1,1 last fall, and have had no issues at all. It runs great. I also upgraded to the 5770 video card from the 7300 card when I did the CPU upgrade. Sorry I can't help you more.

ashman70 -- That's so weird that I used the same expression as the other post, I hadn't seen it before. I feel like I'm in the same boat as SamPotts in the first link... it COULD be the CPUs, but it's hard to find definitive evidence when all the tests seem to come up negative. Interesting that my third-party kexts are unique from these other two.

I have tried a vanilla install of Lion, sadly with no luck

mrgossett -- good to know that at least the combination should theoretically work, thanks

Are you able to run the system with only one CPU? If you are then you could try this as a way of narrowing it down to one CPU that causes the KP's.

The KP is from the Geforce.kext.. that is your video card..
Try getting a 5770 like mentioned in previous post.

Everytime you get a KP, is the Geforce.xxx in the stack trace?

It is highly likely that the KPs were caused by virtualbox. Remove it and see if KPs disappear.

    This is the correct answer.
OP, you need a new card.

I hadn't noticed the Geforce kext in previous KPs, but it doesn't mean it wasn't there. I'll check it and report back next time I have one.

The machine restarted in the middle of the night. The KP Report is below, but I don't see the "Kernel Extensions in backtrace" section like last time.

FrankHahn -- I had tried removing VB and its kexts previously, sadly with no change in behavior

ashman70 -- If it comes to that I could try removing one of the CPUs. If there's any way I can avoid taking apart the machine a 4th time, I'd prefer that. Always seems like a dicey proposition...

Many folks with upgraded CPUs see that behavior. Try updating the firmware to the 2007 MacPro2,1 firmware (that model shipped with those CPUs) as it contains the Intel microcode updates for that CPU.

Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool Released (netkas.org)

Typical response from that tool thread:

Note that you may need two reboots after updating the EFI firmware. I did.

On my first boot after updating the EFI firmware, only one CPU (four cores) was recognized.

With the second and subsequent boots after updating the EFI firmware, both CPUs (eight cores) work fine.

It looks like one can't download the tool without having an activated account. Registered and waiting patiently...

So I downloaded the EFI firmware update, and my computer registers the updated bootrom version (and now correctly reports the CPUs installed in "About this Mac") so everything seemed to have worked properly.

In terms of eliminating the kernel panics, I suppose it's just a wait-and-see situation. If I continue to have more issues, I'll report back here. Thanks again to Mr. Zarniwoop for the tipoff.

**** I'd also like to add that the firmware upgrade had the nice side effect of getting rid of a Finder bug. On copying/moving files, the finder would inconsistently freeze and the dragged icons would get stuck in a semi-transparent state on the screen. Now everything seems to be smooth.

As someone who contemplates x5365 upgrade, I'd love to hear whether you saw any more KPs since upgrading the firmware.

Zero panics since the firmware update, it works like a dream. The firmware is an absolutely crucial element to the equation though. Go for it!

It's interesting to see all those success stories in relation to the firmware upgrade. I am running my MP 1,1 with 2.66GHz 5355's for many months now on the original 1,1 firmware and never experienced a problem.

The question is - is that related to my 1,1 being a refurb with a different firmware than non-refurbs or is it a question of the right CPU stepping (i'm running the latest G0 stepping / SLAEG)?!

To the posters having had success with the firmware upgrade - did you all upgrade to 3.0GHz x5365's and if so, did you purchase the latest G0 stepping (SLAED) or the earlier B3 stepping (SLAC3)?

Despite a promise from the eBay seller, I believe my chips were indeed different stepping - which caused an issue on installation when I accidentally confused slots A and B.

No idea whether the firmware effectiveness was related to my stepping though.

FWIW, I upgraded from a retail quad 2.66 - maybe the firmware is related to the clock speed/ number of cores increase?

    L5335 cpu

    Hi Guys,

i currently have the original 2ghz 5130. Do I need the Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool (1,1 upgrade to 2,1) for an L5335 2ghz chip ?
