Got a problem with my cMP3,1. It chimes but got no display.
Keyboard is not showing caps lock light so I can't even reset NVRAM.

Changed the battery immediately but no joy.
Swapped in my HD 5770 but it makes no difference.

On pressing the Diagnostic LEDs, LED 2 is Yellow and LED 8 is green which seems to suggest there are no power issues.
However LED 7 (GPU present) and LED 9 (EFI Done) are not lit.

Any tips or must the old girl end up in the tip?

I suppose if caps lock light doesn't work then Command-Option-P-R doesn't either?

Reduce ram to minimum?

try this:
System Reset

Mac Pro (Early 2008) has a system reset switch on the logic board that may be used to restart the system while it is powered up. This switch can be used to determine if a computer that won't consistently boot from a cold start has power supply issues. Follow these steps to reset the system:

  1. With the computer powered up, press the SYS_RST switch located in the upper right-hand corner of the logic board. To press the switch, use the nylon probe tool (Apple part number 922-5065).
  2. If the computer boots after you press the SYS_RST switch, try shutting the computer off and restarting by pressing the front power button. If the computer restarts when you press the SYS_RST switch but not from a cold start, the power supply may need to be replaced.

Troubleshooting LED 7

LED 7 should be on when pressing the DIAG_LED button.

Typically to troubleshoot this you would:

  1. Check that the graphics card is seated correctly in its PCI slot
  2. Check that the card’s auxiliary booster power cable is connected properly (i.e. if the card requires one)
  3. Try the graphics card in a different PCI slot
  4. Try another graphics card if you happen to have one handy

Thanks guys.

Tried the minimal RAM and the trouble shooting steps with no joy. Flash seems definitely gone. Everything else seem to be working and get "Help Me" flashing code when there is no RAM.

The reset button simply reboots btw. It's to test if can reboot with that but not power button.

Sorting out a MATT card but experimental for 3,1 which has a different diagnostic port (not Little Frank).

Will take a little while to conclude.
