Confusion around Sierra-->High Sierra-->Mojave.

2010 5,1
Sierra 10.12.6
48GB 1333 RAM
Dual x5680 3.33Ghz

I have studied the entire first post multiple times and I am confused about whether I should install High Sierra 10.13.6 to an empty spinning HDD or an empty SSD...in order to then perform the firmware update 144.0.0.0.0 via the full Mojave installer.

The guide includes the following advice:

use a SATA drive connected into a backplane native SATA port. Keep it simple and use Apple defaults when upgrading Mac Pro firmware.

But also...

Upgrade your firmware from High Sierra installed in an APFS drive:

A lot of people report that can't upgrade the BootROM from High Sierra installed with HFS+, so use a new/empty drive to install High Sierra from an APFS partition. Btw, Mojave requires APFS.

Keep it simple and use Apple defaults when upgrading Mac Pro firmware.

I interpreted "use a SATA drive" and "use Apple defaults" as instruction to use an original spinning HDD that came with the cMP 5,1. BUT, High Sierra on an HDD is HFS+ and not APFS.

I think my understanding of the term SATA drive as different to an SSD may be where my confusion lies.

Could you please advise whether I should install High Sierra to an original HDD in a backplane native SATA port or if I should install it to an SSD in a backplane native SATA port. Many thanks!

Don't matter at all if is a hard disk drive or a SSD, a SATA SSD is a SATA drive.

The point is that need to be a single SATA device connected to the southbridge SATA ports, not a RAID, not a SAS, not a PCIe device, not a PCIe SATA controller, not anything else.

Re-worded the note:

- AppleRAID, RAID & SATA III PCIe cards note:

You can't upgrade your firmware if you are booting from a RAID array or from a SATA III card. The point is that need to be a single SATA device (HDD or SSD) connected to the Mac Pro southbridge SATA ports, not a RAID, not a SAS, not a PCIe device, not a PCIe SATA controller, not a PCIe AHCI blade. Open your Mac Pro, remove all RAID controllers, PCIe SATA cards, PCIe AHCI or NVMe M.2/U.2 drives, disconnect all RAID drives, including AppleRAID, and use a single SATA drive connected into a backplane native SATA port. Keep it simple and use Apple defaults when upgrading Mac Pro firmware.

Btw, Mojave don't boot from SoftwareRAID/AppleRAID arrays or any hardware array that present to the OS as multiple disks.

It's uncommon but sometimes you can't upgrade from PCIe AHCI and NVMe blades too, so use the same advice if you have any problems while upgrading the firmware.

Thanks for clarifying. The guide has been excellent so far - many thanks for your efforts.

So if I understand this correctly these three cards will support High Sierra both before and AFTER the boot update to 144 AND according to Apple they are capable of running Mojave with a boot up screen.
  • SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition *
  • NVIDIA Quadro K5000 for Mac *
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition *

These specific third-party graphics cards are Metal-capable and compatible with macOS Mojave on Mac Pro (Mid 2010) and Mac Pro (Mid 2012):
    • MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560 128-bit 4GB GDRR5
    • SAPPHIRE Radeon PULSE RX 580 8GB GDDR5
    • SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition *
    • NVIDIA Quadro K5000 for Mac *
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition *
  • Just wanted to make sure of this before I ran out and bought a video card, I think that's what I understood and just want a confirmation. Thank you!

Pre-boot configuration support is totally overrated nowadays. You can get pre-boot configuration support for any modern AMD GPU (AMD RX 460/480 and newer cards) using OpenCore.

No need whatsoever to pay stupid prices for Mac Edition GPUs that are 8 years old and have poor 4K support.

Totally agree!!

I live pretty close to a college that periodically get rids of mac pro 4,1's along with their graphics cards from time to time, they let them go for cheep, cheep :) Just have to have good timing. In fact that's where I bought my 4,1 now 5,1 and 23" monitor. I don't need crazy graphics, but when you see the posts from the 7's and 5700's and 850's the will get's weak :)

Just buy the cheapest METAL supported GPU that you can get, like a RX 460/480/560/580. If you really need a stronger GPU, look at VEGA/VII.

NAVI will require Catalina and to install one you need to have an older METAL GPU that is supported with High Sierra to do all the firmware upgrades - this excludes any GPU newer than VEGA. VII requires 10.14.5 and NAVI 10.15.1, VII/NAVI won't work with older releases than the initial macOS requirement.

I just want to give my experience. I have 2 cmp 4.1. I’ve successfully upgraded both using 2 different cards:
- an old gt-120 (or radeon 4570 if I remember correctly) for the upgrades up to high sierra
- a nvidia 4000 for mac for the upgrade to mojave (maybe it could be added to the first post together with the k5000)
Now I want to use the opencore to install catalina... it will be a bit of an effert but I think it’s worth. I already bought the rx 5700 xt 50th anniversary to do that. I’m in the process...

Did your Nvidia 4000 for mac work IN mojave? without any "extra's"?

Quadro 4000 is a Fermi generation card. Apple removed Fermi drivers from Mojave.

Nvidia Quadro K4000 is the Mojave compatible model.

Was wondering if someone can help. I was able to flash my 4.1 to 5.1 MP51.88Z.007.B03.1010071432 successfully about 3 years ago or so.. I was able to run Sierra or HS I cant recall for a couple of years. At one point I did a supplimental update and after that I was no longer able to boot back GUI and keep getting Kernel Panic. The cMP has been put to shelf and just now have time to get back on it. So I run ASD and everything passed. I can boot to single mode but that is the extent of it. Installers tried Sierra and HS also gets kernel panic. I tried swapping memory and GT120 to flashed 7950 With same results.

Hoping I can get it back up to install Sierra ->HS->Mojave and update the bootrom along the way.

I've upgraded the bootRom to MP51.0089.B00 but my Mac Pro 2009 doesn't recognize the Sapphire RX 580 4gb. Any help?

Sorry, mine is 4g, yes.

It's a fully supported GPU, Apple started to support it natively with 10.12.6, any earlier macOS release will not work.

macOS fully works with it, nothing is needed to be done. If it's correctly installed on your Mac Pro, powered by a dual mini-6-pin to 8-pin cable and you are using a standard non-hacked install, it will work - if not, check the GPU with a PC to be sure that the card is working.

Checked with windows and worked. tested with my Mac Pro 2009 by HDMI cable and get no signal; I'll try with DVI.

Thank you!

Let's be real here, you didn't solve anything, you just hidden the problem. You have to run AHT/ASD and find what is/are causing your KPs.

As long as it works for me that is solved as I was able to pass KP. At least I was further than I was where before and was really stuck on it.

As I already stated in previous post AHT/ASD everything passed. So I dont know.... Unless someone have better suggestion.

If you passed ASD and still has KPs, you could have memory controller problems, RAM errors that don't trigger the ECC or something faulty, like QPI, that it's not tested by ASD/AHT.

The PanicLog saved inside the NVRAM will have clues. Boot memtest86 and let it run for a day.

I was running 3 stick of 1GB I removed 1 and still the same.

I just purchased 4 sticks of 4GB RAMs and installed 4 it was still the same. Then down to 1 no change.

I already reseated the CPU this morning and changed the rivet on the Northbridge as well and it was still the same.

Planning to change CPU to x5690 or x5680 or w3680 which ever I can find first.

I will give memtest86 a run.

The memory controller is that on the CPU tray board?

I tried removing the cpu=1 and it panicked.

Since Nehalem, Intel moved the memory controller from the chipset to the CPU die itself.

com.apple.driver.AppleTyMCEDriver is the kext that manages ECC RAM, like I said before, this can be processor, RAM or the CPU tray.

Check the ECC RAM with memtest86.

The only other thing that can trigger this KP is if someone used clover in the past with this Mac Pro and f_cked up the NVRAM volume.

When I got it about 5 years ago it had the blinking folder, so I thought it was just the failed HD, but after putting new HD was also getting KP then, anyhow was able to revive it and I was able to use it for like 2 years.

Since I got It never use clover or anything like that, who knows what previous owner did.

I run the memtest86 overnight with the new 4x4 16gig sticks and so far its clean.

I will replace the CPU next.
