I'm thinking of revisiting Ventura on my Mac Pro 6,1 now that support for Monterey is coming to and end.
What are the outstanding limitations with DRM, CPU power management and graphics acceleration?
So here is the truth as it pertains to my MacPro and my needs .....

You can go all the way to the newest MacOS with OCLP with little to no issues ... my outstanding shortcomings were the following:

1) There is a funny little bug where you can not see the person you are "video" FaceTiming . However Microsoft teams and zoom still work just fine and are not affected by this bug.
2) I am able to see movies from Apple store ( on a Thunderbolt Display ) however in 1080p not higher resolution as maybe available.
3) The benchmarks results for the MacOS upgrades always show improved results for disk access and graphics however when going back to Monterey - the system is just faster responding for some reason all around ( opening windows, applications , etc.....) so is this case totally confused and no help.

Otherwise for me all other apps ( newer versions ) work just fine with no issues - including maps photos calendar and all the productivity suits ( Microsoft or iWork's ......)

What did I do at the end ... I came back to Monterey ( after 1.5 years of using newer MacOS versions ) cause I just like the simpler layout of things .... and it just feels faster overall for some reason ( maybe someone can shed some light on this ) ..... With best wishes.

After installing Sonoma on my Mac Pro 6,1

csrutil status

gives

System Integrity Protection status: unknown (Custom Configuration).

Configuration:
Apple Internal: disabled
Kext Signing: disabled
Filesystem Protections: disabled
Debugging Restrictions: enabled
DTrace Restrictions: enabled
NVRAM Protections: enabled
BaseSystem Verification: enabled
This is an unsupported configuration, likely to break in the future and leave your machine in an unknown state.
Can any of the disabled settings be enabled and still have a functioning system?

Can any of the root patches be skipped (e.g. wifi) and still have a functioning system?

I set up a triple boot with OCLP... Monterey, Sequoia, and Windows 11. Works great.

Thanks. I tried Ventura and Sonoma. OK but a few niggles. Gone back to Monterey; like you I find it works smoothly and I can just trust its stability.

Known issue with AMD GCN 1.0 GPUs (D300/500/700/M370X and etc):

The workaround is starting Chrome with OpenGL rendering:

Code:
open /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app --args --use-angle=gl
Update:

Kinda quiet in here these days ...

I've been using this workaround from Alex on my MacPro6,1 trash can since he posted it, but there's a problem: you start up the app with these arguments, it runs fine, then you check for Updates and it has an update. You update the app, then it restarts itself - without the extra arguments. So you get another system freeze-up and red blocks in the app ... until you can quit out of it (usually after a minute or three).

Is there any other permanent workaround that doesn't involve using "--args --use-angle=gl" every time?

Edit: I did not try the electron_patcher.py Python script described in the GitHub link above. Was wondering if perhaps OCLP 2.2.0 might have a perma-fix, or if there's something else out there.

06.01.2023 — In macOS Ventura, Apple removed support for all USB 1.1 drivers leaving some older Macs unable to use USB 1.1 peripherals.

Well, here I am again ...

I installed OCLP 2.2.0 and installed it to disk, etc. Then I did the Sonoma 14.7.3 upgrade ... OCLP interceded, did its thing, after the OS upgrade finished OCLP did the root patches, rebooted, etc.

So far so good, until I tried to log in ... the keyboard and mouse are back to not working :-(

I have the keyboard and mouse plugged in to the back of my Dell U3014 monitor, which worked fine back when I had responded to this quoted post back last August ... I am remoted in (using TigerVNC) to the system from my Linux PC so I can do stuff, but without a working USB keyboard and mouse I'm up the creek.

What's strange is that System Information sees everything out on the USB bus(es), and my badge reader and Logitech video cam (both plugged directly into the onboard USB ports) both work. It's just the keyboard and mouse that don't.

Any ideas?

Update:

Unplugged the keyboard & mouse from the Dell monitor USB ports, bought an Insignia™ 4-port portable USB 3.0 hub at Best Buy®, plugged it directly into an onboard USB port and connected the mouse, keyboard and my Logitech Webcam to the hub, and voilà - everything works again!

(I don't think anyone reads this thread anymore, so I'm talking to myself ... )

Things are mostly stable for me (still on Sonoma 14.7.3), but having Microsoft Teams do the "red window" thing - even when invoked via "--args --use-angle=gl" - is killing me. I need to be able to use Teams ... and I'm relegated to using it on my iPhone for now.

Don’t worry RN, you are not talking to yourself… 😊

I still have my trusty ‘13MP running, albeit mostly for fun. I have long since moved to working on my ‘19MP and my ‘22MS.

The trashcan is running smoothly though when I use it, and all I need it to do works. It’s running Sequoia 15.3.1, with OpenCore 2.2.0.

In my "infinite wisdom," I updated to Sequoia 15.4 B4 (24E5228e). I figured what the heck - all was working on B3.

Now my MP6,1 starts, you can tell it gets going, but eventually, the screen goes black. I can start it up fine in Safe Mode, and I have reapplied the root patches (OpenCore Legacy Patcher 2.2), and it looks like it will work, but alas.

I can appreciate I probably have to wait for ver. 2.3, but is anyone working on this any more?

Most recently running 15.3 & OCLP with MacPro 6.1 ( > 5 months) . Have to say " just a feeling" but running smoother and "faster" then previous visions of MacOS - feels as the last version of truly supported macOS - Monterey. I think this one may be the one for me for a while ..... :)

Funny thing I had this as well at the beginning of moving to the new version of "teams" and it seems to have "figured" itself out ? Now running the latest version of MacOS (15.3) and teams and no more weird strange colors. Hopefully it will persist :)

Thanks you guys. Sacrificing your machines lifespans to allow development of macOS Ventura on Mac Pro 6,1.
I always had an attraction to this machine. But with GPU issues galore and the availability of Apple Silicon I avoided buying it

Weird. Well my trash can is still on Sonoma 14.7.4, maybe that is part of the problem.

At least it's not like on my poor 2012 Mac mini, it's also on Sonoma 14.7.4 and running any version of the Teams app crashes WindowServer and logs me out! I had to create a WebApp version of Teams in Microsoft Edge to be able to use it without it killing WindowServer ...

For what it's worth;

I saw that OpenCore Legacy Patcher ver. 2.3.2 was out. I logged onto my '13 Mac Pro in Safe Mode and updated. After I ran the Post-install Root Patch and installed it to Boot, I could successfully boot normally into macOS Sequoia 15.4 B4.

I cleaned up a few things, updated to macOS Sequioia 15.5, and reran the patches, and everything is fine now.

I guess there was something in macOS 15.4 B4 that did not work until the latest version of OpenCore.

why did you login into safe mode, is it just as a precaution or is that a step you have to do for this model of mac?

In my post above I explained that B4 broke the setup and I could only boot into Safe mode. Only when I upgraded OpenCore to 2.3.2 could I get into macOS normally.

I am having the "red rectangles" issues on my MacPro … with the browsers' the fix proposed seems to work. Unfortunately 1Password is un-usable and what's worst is that the app freezes and kinda freezes the Mac Pro too :-/

I'm assuming the issue is related to electron as it basically spawns a "web browser" to open the app.

The same can be seen on the Spotify App. Red blocks and just basically killing the app.

I wonder if there is a way to force electron apps to also use OpenGL.

Yes! Sequoia 15.4 installed as the main system on a clean drive …

I've also found a nice script that shoud apply the command provided above automagically on every Electron app but at the moment 1password is unusable…
Mind sharing that script?
