The great thing about doing something good, is that it is OK to do it for any reason that makes you happy (even credit on a MacRumors thread) because at the end of the day it benefits people.

If I was dying, I wouldn't care if someone gave me blood because their MacRumor buddies would like them more. They saved my life. Why is it so bad they did it for one reason or another?

If people would do more good things because of threads on MacRumors, how cool would that be?

Well I suppose you have a point there. If more people are giving blood because of the MacRumors blood drive, that's a good thing — which I think I already said a few comments back. ;)

My comment was addressed more to the people who get upset because they're classified high-risk. I just question the motivation sometimes. But having said that, it may be that the US system is indeed prejudiced, and if so then perhaps they have a point.

Regarding your first, rather general statement about 'doing something good for any reason that makes you happy', are you sure? What about a teacher who only does it for the money and doesn't really care about the children? A politician who only does what he thinks will win him the next election? A church minister who only visits his wealthier parishioners? A date who pays for an expensive meal and lavishes you with compliments only because he wants sex at the end? I would argue that people who only do things for selfish ends tend to end up causing more harm than good in the end. Anyway, that's probably a debate better left for PRSI. ;)

No matter what reason you donated blood for, just remember you are saving so many lives. I never donated blood before I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 15. I had to receive numerous blood transfusions and platelets after each chemo session just to stay alive. Thank you everyone who donated. I hope you know how important it is to people like me :)

I donated and I am "O" Positive. I was hoping to be A or B negative to donate for some one who needed AB Negative. Anyway, I will keep on donating and hoping my blood would be useful to someone.

I love the Blood Drive on MacRumors! I have been the recipient after blood drives in the last year, and even just platelets too.

Blood transfusions help a lot cancer patients!

:D*thumb up*

Just a thought

It's very nice that people donate such things and others organize drives to collect donations. Nothing wrong with that.

But it may interest people who are actually facing surgery that many of the best surgeons are moving to use less and less blood. They find that recovery is faster and easier (also means cheaper for everyone, although that's less important) when foreign substances are not introduced to the body, including blood. And complications are almost invariably fewer.

Leukemia is a standout that really can't avoid transfusions easily, but almost anything else is better the other way.

The US Army decided that was true over a year ago, and partnered with Englewood HMC to move to bloodless surgery.

Another advantage is that it leaves more blood in the blood banks for people who can't do without a transfusion.

The MacRumors 2011 Blood Drive has passed the 2-week mark and has reached 40 donations of blood, platelets, and plasma! We've gotten messages of support and thanks from a number of forum members whose lives were saved by donated blood. By donating you can help save others.

We've heard from some users who missed our original announcement of the drive but learned about it when they noticed signatures of forums posters who have been promoting the blood drive. Everyone is welcome to copy/paste this line into their forum signature:

:) I support the MacRumors Blood Drive! :)

Today is Memorial Day in the U.S. It's a good day for Americans to donate blood, for three reasons:

1. You probably have a day off work.

2. Today's holiday honors veterans, many of whom have depended on blood donations.

3. Any day is a good day to donate, in the U.S. or elsewhere! :)

I would like to personally thank everyone who participated! Congratulations and well done!

I would also like to thank Doctor Q for helping to make the blood drive become a reality for the second time running.

Thanks everyone!
