may 13: 3 Units of Platelets

3 Units of Platelets donated at Torrance, CA American Red Cross.

Donated another triple unit of platelets today. I asked what contributed to a high platelet count and the phlebotomist (corrected me that she's not a nurse) said stress does it. Not what I wanted to hear, but there are lots of ways to interpret stress, i.e. not necessarily emotional or traumatic. Exercise is a form of stress, when you think about. Pushing your physical limits, kinda stressfull for your muscles. I honestly thought she was pulling my leg at first. I still kind of do....:)

Although I had very good intentions of donating during the blood drive, I have been unwell the last several weeks with various symptoms - pains in chest, light headedness, shortness of breath. I recently had an ECG and routine bloods and I am still waiting back to hear the results. I thought it would be best to postpone my donation at least for another few weeks.

May 30 double Platelet Donation

My second May donation, my 231th Platelet Donation, on 30 May 2013. So two more units need to be added. I forgot to add this last Thursday.

Final Tally

The MacRumors 2013 Blood Drive has ended but we hope you'll continue to donate blood and platelets, spread the word about how important it is, and sign up for the organ donor registry and bone marrow registry if you haven't already done so.

Didn't get to make it in time this year as I donated (whole blood) yesterday (it's 5 June here now) I will attach my arm pic tho.

Since I last donated they got rid of the beds. You now sit in a chair and they pivot the chair back..

Had a bit of fun there as well... I sat down for my coffee and biscuits (cookies for those on the western side of the pond) and felt something warm running down my arm... Looked over and I'd had a rebleed. I was soon cleaned up and a new plaster (band aid) was applied to my arm.

It was my 30th Donation.. 20 more and I get the gold award (NHS Blood and Transplant run a donor award scheme)

The height of luxury! I assume that the armrest can easily be switched to the other side so you can pick which arm to use.

You must have been donating for years to get to 30 donations and it'll take more years to reach 50 donations. Congratulations on that long-term commitment.

Yes the armrest can be switched round, as can the little table (which also incorporates mounts for the scales that monitor the weight of the blood donation) They just click in and click out.. There's an article on the new chairs that NHS Blood and Transplant use in the UK. http://www.britishdesigninnovation.com/?id=3103

My first donation was in 1996, but there were a couple of years I didn't donate, and yes it'll take a few years before I get to 50 donation (I reckon another 5 years), but I should make the emarald and diamond awards (75/100 donations) as well before my health/old age prevents me from donating anymore.
