The Seventh Annual MacRumors Blood Drive runs for the month of May 2016. We ask you to donate blood and platelets this month, register for the bone marrow registry, and/or register as an organ donor. We welcome first-time donors and we'll be glad to explain what to do, give you tips, and congratulate you afterwards. Remember that every donor was once a first-time donor, and every donor is a hero every time they donate.

We hope to top our Blood Drive results from our six previous Blood Drives, which have collectively recorded donations of over 300 units of blood and platelets, as well as new members of organ donor and bone marrow registries. See the FAQ for details.

Your blood or platelet donations will help other people survive or recover from injury, surgery, or illness. Your registration as a potential bone marrow or organ donor gives you the potential to cure someone of a life-threatening disease or preserve the life of someone who suffers organ failure.

How to participate in the MacRumors Blood Drive:

1. Donate blood or platelets, in May if possible. Register as a bone marrow donor. Register as an organ donor.

Since we're in cyberspace we don't collect blood ourselves. Donate blood or platelets at a donation center in your area. Pick a day when you can spare an hour or two and make an appointment. See our Blood and Platelet Donation page for details and donor centers by country.

To register to be a stem cell or bone marrow donor you typically fill out a form and have your cheek swabbed. Nothing to it! Registering as an organ donor is just as easy. Depending on your country, most of it can be done online by filling out a form. You may be asked to sign a donor card or put a sticker on your driver's license. See our Organ, Tissue, and Bone Marrow Donation page for details and donor programs by country.
2. Let us know about it

The reward for donating or registering is personal satisfaction that's hard to describe. But we want to add to your reward by giving you a well-deserved pat on the back.

After you donate, post to tell us about your donation or registration experience. If you donated blood or platelets, tell us how many units and if you're a first-time donor. Tell us if you've just registered as a bone marrow donor or an organ donor. You can post photos too if you want.

We're keeping an Honor Roll to give you public thanks for your generosity, and to encourage others.
3. Spread the word
  • Not everyone is eligible to donate blood, and in fact it's less than 50% of the population. Even if you can't donate blood, you may be able to register as a marrow and organ donor. Please support our drive whether or not you can donate blood yourself.

Let others know about the need for these donations. Convince a friend, relative, classmate, or coworker to donate blood. If you do, tell us about it. We want to recognize your actions.

Many potential donors are still frustrated by the U.S. restrictions on gay male donors. This year the rules have been changed to be more in line with other countries. See the Blood donor eligibility discussion thread.

Have my 11th donation booked for next week. Took my wife last time and so she is donating again this month. I am a reasonably rate blood type so know it is important to give even more than others.

My wife (O-) and I (A-) donate regularly, each well over 5 gallons and counting. Our next donation day will be May 31, so I'll be thinking about MacRumors when we're sitting in the chair.

Good luck to all!

Thank you all for donating. Unfortunately, I am never allowed to donate. I lived in The Netherlands and Germany in the US Armed forces during the late 80's and early 90's. For some reason that is a permanent disqualifier.

I just did an Automated Red Cell donation back on March 31. I won't be eligible to donate again until July, unfortunately.

Nothing unfortunate about it. There's no telling how many lives you've saved.

Forum members can make our Honor Roll by telling us about a donation last month, a donation this month, the date of a donation appointment they have made for next month, or by telling us about a friend or relative whose donation they've encouraged, suggested, or facilitated. We want to say thanks in all of these cases!

Thanks and congratulations to the many donors we've heard from so far.

I've been donating blood once every year since the late 1970's. It's one of the feel good moments for me. Plus, I like the cookies they give you afterwards..lol

I wouldn't call it permanent, just "indefinite". The concern is prion diseases (Mad Cow in cows and Creutzfeld-Jacob in humans which are thought to be closely related) which they are not able to test the blood supply for. The military bases in Germany and Netherlands during the 80s had their beef sourced from the UK which is where much of the Mad Cow/CJD has occurred, so to avoid transmitting it through transfusions, anyone who might have had substantial exposure to British beef is barred from donating for the forseeable future.

Remember, men who have had sex with other men were once permanently banned from donating blood, but the CDC recently lifted that rule. They still require that at least a year has passed since last sexual contact with another man, but they don't care how many women you may have had sex with or whether you ever use protection, though. Having said that, thanks for your military service!

Happily straight and donating blood for decades.

I've been denied numerous times for various reasons including travel, medication, and diet, but I gladly defer to the actual medical professionals' decision.

Bonus: my blood screening results include a free cholesterol report, among others. Cheap and easy way to keep tabs on an issue for many, including myself.

Chalk up another pint - donated this morning.

Thank you all for donating blood and signing up to be on the bone marrow registry!
I was diagnosed with A.L.L. Leukemia 5 years ago this month. I have received THREE Bone Marrow (Stem cell) transplants from two different donors, and received more than 30 units of blood during my treatment. I am very thankful to all the donors that saved my life. You too can save a life! Also, if you are reluctant in signing up on the bone marrow registry, read up on the modern way to donate bone marrow. More than 90% of the matched donors only need to donate stem cells, a much easier process that does not require any drilling into bone. It is a process that is more similar to donating plasma. Fun fact, did you know that you can change blood types if your donor is a different type than you? I'm on my 3rd.

Because of all of my donors, I have been cancer free for more than 3 years!

Thanks to everyone who donated! My cousin was born early, and had quite a few transfusions. She wouldn't have loved otherwise. Who know, maybe you were the one that saved her, so thanks.

I'm actually donating a kidney to my Dad next Tuesday (the 10th). He's been on dialysis a little over a year but is doing really well, he turns 70 later this year. The hospital we're having the procedure done at (Baylor in Dallas) also told me back in September when I first visited them that I would have to lose 20 pounds before I could donate (I kind of expected this as I was at 230 at the time, a little heavy for me) and I've lost 40 since then. Definitely encourage everyone to consider blood and organ donation and be sure and take care of yourself as well!

I would support the blood drive, but unfortunately I just donated on the 29th of April, and am not eligible again until 25 June, so I can't donate in your window. I do donate as often as I can (I'm O- and CMV-, so I'm pretty much the universal donor), but no credit with you I reckon. Sorry! I encourage all others to donate if possible, however.

MacRumors is pleased to announce the Seventh Annual MacRumors Blood Drive, throughout the month of May 2016. Our goal every year is to save lives by increasing the number of life-saving blood and platelet donations. While most blood drives are specific to a geographic location, our blood drive is online and worldwide. To date we have recorded donations of over 300 units of blood and platelets.

Led by CEO Tim Cook, Apple supports health, relief, and charity efforts, including the recent Apps for Earth promotion. The MacRumors Blood Drive is run by the staff and volunteers of MacRumors.

We ask that you:

1. Donate blood or platelets at any donation center near you, join the bone marrow registry in your country, and sign up for the organ donor registry in your state, province, or country.

2. Post in the MacRumors 2016 Blood Drive! thread to tell us about it and to accept our thanks.

3. Share our message with other people you know.

For details see the MacRumors 2016 Blood Drive! thread and our traditional Honor Roll of donors.

There are many reasons that you should participate in the MacRumors Blood Drive. Consider what some of our forum members have said:

User A.Goldberg:User TheBean75:User I14:How to participate

1. If you are eligible, schedule a blood or platelet donation (see FAQ), in May if possible. Register for the bone marrow registry and/or register as an organ donor (see FAQ).

2. If you aren't eligible to donate blood for reasons of health, age, height/weight, recent donation, or the temporary deferral for gay men that applies in many countries, please encourage someone else to make a donation, and let us know. The U.S. FDA has revised the rules since last year; see our Blood donor eligibility forum thread.

3. Help our drive by thanking donors and convincing friends and relatives to donate as well.
