I used to donate regularly for the past twenty years but I can't now due to health issues. I also had to be removed from the bone marrow donor registery. I felt bad because I had just got selected as a potential match for someone. I had been on the registry for 23 years.

If you're able, you should sign up to be a potential bone marrow donor. In most cases now the donation process is similar to giving blood instead of having to extract it directly from the bones.

Thanks for donating. As a gay man I cannot unless I abstained from sex for 12
Months.
I hate to hear that. Maybe we should be simultaneously raising awareness/funding for whatever tests need to be possible to test blood donations in a quick and affordable way. I'm assuming the reason this law is in place is because currently it is not cost effective to do so. Is this your understanding?

Led by CEO Tim Cook,

I find this quite ironic, since Tim Cook, a gay man, is ineligible to donate blood.

I, too, am a gay man, and until I came out in 1992, was a 2+ gallon donor. But now my blood "isn't good enough" even though I'm healthy, drug, and disease free. I applaud those of you that do this, though, so don't get me wrong. After my husband had an unusual reaction to a medication and lost 6 pints of blood, causing him to need a transfusion of 4 pints + other fluids, I felt helpless. But at least there are awesome folks out there that can, and do, donate.

I'm signed up for Friday the 13th! Hoping it doesn't get TOO graphic...

I did this last month. I'll just go ahead and accept your collective love :)

I would happily donate but my blood isn't good enough because I'm gay.

I'm curious, do you live in California? I was under the impression that this is no longer the policy here. If it is, that's truly insane.

Just donated whole blood for my 6th time today!

I was all scheduled to donate yesterday, but it turns out that due to the travel vaccinations I have been having I can't. Shame :(

Only 7 days but I'm then due to have another which in turn is 7 days before we leave. I don't think I will have time.

May is over so the MacRumors 2016 Blood Drive has ended, but the need for donations of blood and platelets continues. We choose one month each year to call attention to donations, but there are people in need every day of the year. Please continue to donate.

Congratulations to the participants in this year's Blood Drive, who donated 59 units of blood, platelets, and plasma. Since we began holding the annual MacRumors Blood Drive we've recorded donations of 377 units of blood, platelets, and plasma! We've posted a complete breakdown in the Blood Drive thread.

We know there are many anonymous donors in our community, and we thank them, but we offer a special salute to the donors who stepped up to help us publicize the critical need for these acts of charity. See the Blood Drive Honor Roll for a list of this year's donors.

If you are a regular donor, please continue to look for opportunities to donate. If you are an eligible donor who hasn't donated before, consider making your first donation to save some lives. If you aren't eligible to donate, please support and encourage those who can. You are welcome to read and share our information pages:

Thank you!

Thanks to donations just reported, the MacRumors 2016 Blood Drive totals are slightly higher than reported above.

New totals:

Participants donated 62 units of blood, platelets, and plasma. Since we began holding the annual MacRumors Blood Drive we've recorded donations of 381 units of blood, platelets, and plasma!

The complete breakdown has been updated as well.
