The Eleventh Annual MacRumors Blood Drive runs for the month of May 2020. If you are healthy, we ask you to donate blood, platelets, or plasma this month. Your donation will help other people survive or recover from injury, surgery, or illness. See the Blood and Platelet Donation FAQ for details.

We also ask that you register as an organ donor and register for the bone marrow registry, if you haven't already. You might preserve the life of someone who suffers organ failure, or cure someone of a life-threatening disease like leukemia. See the Organ, Tissue, and Bone Marrow Donation FAQ for details.

These acts of charity are more important than ever during the current coronavirus pandemic, and there is an additional way that some people can help others: If you've recovered from a case of COVID-19, you can donate "convalescent plasma" that might help the recovery of a serious COVID-19 patient. (You can read more about convalescent plasma from the Red Cross, the American Assocation of Blood Banks, or New York Blood Centers.) However, if you have COVID-19 symptoms or an active infection, stay home and we wish you a speedy return to full health.

Let's save some lives!

A. Participate in the MacRumors Blood Drive during the month of May

1. Donate blood, platelets, or plasma, register as an organ donor, or register as a bone marrow donor

Donate at any donation center in your area. Pick a day when you can spare an hour or two, and make an appointment. Donation centers are taking extra precautions to protect you from the coronavirus. Expect some additional questions and screening.
Registering as an organ donor is easy. Depending on your country, you may be able to register online by filling out a form. You may be asked to sign a donor card or put a sticker on your driver's license. To register to be a stem cell or bone marrow donor, you typically fill out a form and have your cheek swabbed.
Not everyone is eligible to donate blood. There are restrictions on age, weight, donation frequency, health conditions, etc. See the Blood donor eligibility thread for discussions of the donor restrictions on sexually active gay males and news about the current reduction in the deferral period.
Please support our drive whether or not you can donate blood yourself. If you convince someone else to donate, you both earn a spot on the Honor Roll.

2. Let us know about it

The reward for donating or registering is personal satisfaction from helping others. But we want to add to your reward by giving you a well-deserved pat on the back.
After you donate or register, post in this thread and tell us about it. For blood, platelet, and plasma donations, tell us how many units. You can even post a photo of your arm bandage or plaster.
Check out our Honor Roll, where we give you public thanks for your generosity.

3. Spread the word - #MacRumorsBloodDrive

Let others know about the need for these donations. Share with your followers. Encourage friends, relatives, classmates, and coworkers to donate.
If you're received a blood transfusion, share your story.
And please thank the donors who post here.

B. Participate the rest of the year

Continue donating blood, platelets, or plasma from June 2020 to April 2021. Each time you do, register your donation on our Team MacRumors page, as follows:
  1. Go to the 2020-2021 Team Page. Bookmark it for the next time.
  2. Click PLEDGE TO GIVE BLOOD.
  3. Fill in your MacRumors username as your first name and @ macrumors as your last name.
  4. In the Comments field, tell us what type of donation and how many units, e.g., 1 unit of whole blood, 2 units of platelets, etc.
  5. Fill in an email address and zip code. The fields are required but MacRumors won't use that information.
We'll tally your donations from June to April and count them toward the MacRumors Blood Drive and its Honor Roll next May.

My blood donation scheduled for this morning (it would have been number 44 according to https://blood.ca/ ) got cancelled because I just recently went on blood thinners due to some Deep Vein Thrombosis brought on by sitting in lockdown. Let me encourage you to get up and regularly move around to help prevent blood clots!

I've already registered for bone marrow and tissue donation.

I will need to wait about 6 months for the blood thinner therapy to finish before blood donations are allowed next.

Congratulations. You've made the Honor Roll!

Have you donated before? If so, was this experience different due to pandemic safety measures?

Sadly I'm not allowed to donate since I'm a Brit transplant here so am apparently still prohibited from donating due to CJD.

That said, sig modified to rally support!

Just saw this thread. Donated yesterday pm, all a bit weird with the distancing going on but managed to squeeze it out. I also finally signed up for them to test it for Platelets (I'm A- so have had a few letters) so, I guess they'll get back to me if they want them from me. I think they're quite particular about them here and you can't just be tested for platelets without providing a full donation as well for some reason. I suspect you've got to br a Grand Cru vintage rather than just the cheap supermarket screw top plonk which I probably am.

As an aside, In the lock down I'm running more than I would usually, and without thinking, went out for one this morning, OMG, that was hard. I'm still feeling like an old man...

jbachandouris and scubachap are on the Honor Roll for their blood donations. Who's next?

Yes I have, I’m not sure how many times. They took my temp before I could go back to the donation area, only major pandemic related difference

I was very pleased with my birthday yesterday; received well wishes, presents, and good-natured jabs at my reaching the big 70. The best gift though was my former teammates, colleagues, and friends getting together in various parts of the world and donating blood on my birthday.

My blood donor teams donated 18 pints.

Individual colleagues and friends donated 8 pints.

Wow. Amazing effort from all your friends and family and happy birthday for yesterday :). Thank you.

To all those that can I just want say thank you. Especially in the current climate your donations are a literal lifeline.

I just registered for the bone marrow/stem cell registry. (It seems that the actual extraction process is less scary than I imagined!)

Still need to wait for about 4 weeks before I can donate blood due to the medication I used.

Congratulations! Registering for the bone marrow/stem cell registry is an act of real generosity, even though you may never be called as a match for someone who needs a transplant.

For those who don't know, bone marrow donation involves minor surgery to extra bone marrow, usually from the hip. But stem cell donation does not; it usually requires taking medicine that causes bone marrow stem cells to move into the bloodstream, where they can be taken out like a blood donation. A patient without an immune system then receives your stem cells, and your immune system becomes their immune system.

Thank you @Doctor Q ! I hope that improves the odd of finding a match by a little. It seems to me that the risk and discomfort on the donor’s part is really very low especially when compared to the patient’s, but the return of saving someone’s life is huge. It’s a winning tradeoff.

After being let out of the penalty box (in for 24 apheresis donations in a 52 week, 2 day period) I donated May 7th at ARC Woodland Hills, CA. I'm trying to reschedule for the 21st but their pewter is throwing a tantrum.

Donated a unit of whole blood yesterday. Not much difference. They took my temperature about three times at various points and wore more protective clothes. Some additional questions on the form. That's it. I asked if the number of donors dropped significantly and they said no, it's about the same 🤷‍♀️
