CBS WAITING PERIOD FOR MALARIA-RISK TRAVEL REDUCED
A new blood donor eligibility change will allow people to donate blood three months after leaving a malaria-risk area if they spent less than six consecutive months there. Before Aug. 30, 2020, these short-term travelers had to wait 12 months.
This change will make it possible for thousands of Canadians to donate blood who previously could not. Malaria risk due to travel is one of the most common reasons for people being unable to donate, second only to having low hemoglobin.
In 2019, between 1,100 and 2,000 donors per month were ineligible to donate due to malaria risk travel.

Donated again today, registered it on the sleevesup link. Took less than 5 minutes to fill the bag. The previous time I donated the girl that 'stuck' me suggested trimming the hair to help the tape stick and prevent a 'secondary donation' when removing the tape. She may have been joking, but after almost 4 gallons of donations I decided it was time to limit that pain so I did it. We're wearing long sleeves now, who's going to see it?

Male blood donors tend to weigh more than female donors, making them more likely to qualify for a double-unit donation. But they tend to have more arm hair, making it less pleasant to get that bandage off!

I always shave my arms before a donation. Last thing I want after a 90-platelet donation is a free “waxing.” 😜

I just donated today -- my 6th donation since the shutdown in March 2020. I have a great Red Cross donation center nearby: staff is very mellow and they play good tunes in the donation area.

Does anyone else run the American Red Cross's "Blood Donor" app on their M1 Mac? I was trying to do my rapidpass this AM and got the error, "This browser is not compatible with this application. Please try a different browser." Absurd, because the browser is wired into the app. I did the rapidpass in Safari.

I'm gathering bug info for the Red Cross app developer. I see the app was rebuilt back in mid-March. Could others try to run the iOS app on their M1 Macs and tell me what you see? I run the app in full-screen mode on my Mac to maximize readability. Try firing up a rapidpass. I see the error right after I enter my full name and hit the "Start Questionnaire" button. You can PM me what you see here or add a message to this discussion. Thanks!

Just a 'drive by', but I remember running into an error like that and the screen said 'Firefox is supported'. So I called them, and said that I was getting an error message on their website, and got the 'Firefox is supported' in human spoken words. So I said that I AM using Firefox, and the human voice said 'Firefox is supported', to which I said Yes, I heard you the first time, but I AM USING FIREFOX, AND IT'S NOT WORKING. Pause... 'Are you sure you are using Firefox?' Yes. 'Well, Firefox is supported, you know'. So I gather... But it's not working for me. 'Well, what version of Firefox are you using?' (Spewed version number) 'Well, MY version of Firefox is XXXXX, and it's working fine'. (Obviously a peecee)

*SIGH*

I gave up...

It didn't work in Chrome either.

is there anything those of us who medically can not donate do? Like a monetary gift and be part of this?
The suggestion we make each year, for people ineligible to donate blood for one reason or another, is that they help the cause by encouraging other people they know (relatives, friends, neighbors, coworkers, classmates) to donate blood, platelets, or plasma. Sometimes all it takes is a suggestion, showing some appreciation, or simply asking somebody if they'll do it to help people in need.

People who can't donate blood may still be eligible to register as an organ donor and/or join the bone marrow registry, and those are wonderful acts of charity, at no cost to you.

And, of course, some blood donation organizations and blood donor centers accept cash donations. It could be a center local to you or a group that works nationally or internationally.

I've also donated 6 times since March of last year. I have another scheduled for next week - my 32nd lifetime donation, on my birthday. I had actually been scheduled a couple weeks ago but decided to reschedule when it ended up falling between my two vaccine shots. Oh yeah, that will also mark 2 weeks and a few days since my second vaccine shot. Yup, lots to celebrate next weekend!

I should add that my local donation center seems to be fairly mellow like yours.

It's great when donors make it a regular habit!

Remember, everyone, that recording your blood donations at the MacRumors Team page, even after the fact, automatically enters those donations in our upcoming MacRumors Blood Drive. This applies to any donations from June 2020 to April 2021.

I've donated three times in the last year.

Our local blood bank is run by Lifestream and each time you donate they test your blood for the COVID antibody and they do a cholesterol test, so that is a nice benefit. My cholesterol usually runs high, but is WAY down in the last couple tests. Maybe eating out less with the Rona?

I think the individuals who volunteer at the donation centers or for specific blood drives are awesome!
