I see Krispy Kreme is giving donuts for people giving blood because of shortages. @Doctor Q, maybe you can contact them to see if they can do a special for our blood drive this year!

The Krispy Kreme promo is described here.

The campaign is focused on blood donations at Red Cross centers, but the fine print says it also applies to platelet donations and that you can donate at other sites as long as you bring a record of the donation.

The promotion is for only a week, January 24 to January 31, so the remaining window is today, tomorrow, or Monday. The donation must be in that window and you must claim your donuts during that same window.

Sure enough, I stopped by a Krispy Kreme shop after donating blood today, and they handed me a dozen donuts! My armband and wristband were probably evidence enough that I had just donated, but I brought a record of my donation too, which they glanced at without really checking the date.

@Doctor Q too bad it ends this weekend. I had trouble scheduling my next donation and missed my window to book for today (which is my 8 week day after my last one). I donate next Saturday instead...

Also, I'm not sure I have one of those near me anyway, we had one but it closed and the location is now Panda Express...

We used to get free pizza slices for about ten years on Thursday evening donations at Canadian Blood Services Toronto headquarters. That stopped around the time of COVID-19. Now, we can't even drink or eat the free muchies they still provide.

Glad to hear that it went well. Be sure to record your donation on our Team Page. Even though it's designed to record pledges, we use it to record donations made by forum members.
I made the pledge yesterday, but I didn’t enter my username in the notes - my name is the same as my username, though!

I donated blood for the first time last week (a unit of whole blood, in Sweden). I was impressed by how quick and effortless it was and will definitely be doing so again! My next window opens in May.

Congratulations, headlessmike. You may have saved up to 3 lives.

We particularly celebrate first-time donors. You stepped up, made the effort, and overcame any trepidation that you had (which is common for people who haven't donated before).

The benefit you bring to people in need is hard to measure. Those who receive transfusions of your blood may not have a way to thank you, so we do it for them!

Health Canada Lifts Gay Ban On Blood Donations

In a long awaited decision, Health Canada has lifted a ban on blood product donations by gay men. The ban has been in place since the 1990s after the ”Tainted Blood Scandal” caused by the Canadian Red Cross. Today’s decision allows the Canadian Blood Services, and the province of Quebec’s blood service, known as Héma-Québec, to accept blood donations from gay men starting 30 September 2022. Sexual orientation will no longer define if someone is deferred from donating. Questions about high-risk sex factors will now apply across all sexual orientations. This decision opens up a significant donor pool that was needed, but kept out for way too long.

^ Just in time for the 2022 MacRumors Blood Drive, starting May 1!

Actually, the change will be implemented "on or before September 30," so we don't know the exact date. It would be surprising if it changed before the end of May. Health Canada said that they need time to change procedures and train staff.
