The Sixteenth Annual MacRumors Blood Drive runs for the month of May 2025. We ask that you donate blood, platelets, or plasma this month. Your donation will help other people survive or recover from injury, surgery, or illness (see the Blood and Platelet Donation FAQ).

We also ask that you sign up for the bone marrow registry and register as an organ donor, if you haven't already. You might preserve the life of someone who suffers organ failure, or cure someone of a life-threatening disease like leukemia (see Organ, Tissue, and Bone Marrow Donation FAQ).

How to participate in the MacRumors Blood Drive

1. Donate blood, platelets, or plasma, register as a bone marrow donor, and/or register as an organ donor

Donate at any donation center in your area. Pick a day when you can spare an hour or two, and make an appointment.

To register to be a stem cell or bone marrow donor, you typically fill out a form and have your cheek swabbed. Registering as an organ donor is also easy. Depending on your country, you may be able to register online by filling out a form. You may be asked to sign a donor card or put a sticker on your driver's license.

If you are ineligible to donate blood, you can still help people in need by arranging for a friend of relative to donate blood. You'll both earn a spot on the Honor Roll.

2. Let us know

The reward for donating or registering is personal satisfaction from helping others. But we want to add to your reward by giving you a well-deserved pat on the back.

After you donate or register, post in this thread and tell us about it. For blood, platelet, and plasma donations, tell us how many units. You can even post a photo of your arm bandage or plaster.

Check out our Honor Roll, where we give you public thanks for your generosity.

3. Spread the word - #MacRumorsBloodDrive

Let others know about the need for these donations. Share with your followers. Encourage friends, relatives, classmates, and coworkers to donate.

If you or someone in your family has received a blood or platelet transfusion, share your story.

And please help us thank the donors who post here.

MacRumors Blood Drive: Team MacRumors

The MacRumors 2025 Blood Drive ends on May 31, 2025, but we ask that you continue donating blood, platelets, and plasma, and we'll continue to tally those donations.

From June 2025 to April 2026, please register your donations on our team page:
  1. Go to the Team MacRumors 2025-2026 page. Bookmark it for the next time.
  2. Click PLEDGE TO GIVE BLOOD.
  3. Fill in your MacRumors username as your first name and @ macrumors as your last name.
  4. In the Comments field, tell us what type of donation, the donation date, and how many units, e.g., 1 unit of whole blood on January 10 or 2 units of platelets on February 20.
  5. The email address and zip code fields are required by the form, but MacRumors won't use that information.
We'll tally your donations from June to April and count them toward the MacRumors 2026 Blood Drive and its Honor Roll next May!

Happy to report that despite being unable to donate as much as I wanted to last year, I'm back in the swing of things for this year and (conveniently with the timing of this thread) have an appointment already set for tomorrow!

This marks my second donation of the year so far, with my first back in February.

I also encourage everyone to take the little bit of time and help save a life. I'm in Canada, so can say from personal experience that Canadian Blood Services makes it incredibly easy to register, book an appointment and donate. Everyone has been very kind and grateful for the donation, and there's free salty snacks! Who couldn't turn down such an offer?

But what's really best is leaving the clinic knowing you've made such an important difference to someone in their time of need. Donating blood is something I had thought about doing but never got around to for such a long time. Now that I've started rolling up my sleeve in these past couple of years, I wish it's something I'd started doing regularly much sooner.

My next blood donation is Saturday, May 10. This is also the 50th anniversary of my bar mitzvah ceremony. There's no better way to commemorate that event than by giving someone the blood they need.

I’m in the UK and donate plasma, and have my next appointment booked for 5th May.
I’d encourage anyone who is able to donate if at all possible.
Blood, platelets and plasma can make a real difference to someone’s life.
😀👍🩸

I want to donate blood for the first time. I have a B Rh+ blood type. What should I do or what should I have done? Since B blood type is rare in my country, I want to donate my own blood and put it in a blood bank. What is your advice

That's very generous of you.

You can contact the Turkish Red Crescent. They have a network of blood donation centers. They handle blood donations, test the blood, then send it to hospitals for patients who need it.

See their Blood Services page and their contact information.

Please let us know if you're able to arrange for a blood donation. We especially celebrate first-time donors.

Forgive me, I can’t remember if you want me to post donations since last year, or throughout the upcoming year. I do plasma, usually 896mL each time. I count 22 times since the beginning of last June.

Yes, the Blood Drive covers donations made from June 1, 2024 through the present. Donations this month aren't more important than donations made in the previous months, except that we choose May as the time to recognize the donors in our forum community.

I had the idea of donating blood for two years. First, I couldn't find blood from my own group during my own surgery. So they gave me O+ blood. Second, I survived the February 2023 earthquakes with injuries and needed blood again. And I couldn't find blood again. I am the only person with B blood group in my nuclear family and my relatives with B group in my extended family are all diabetic or heart patients. 13 million people like me were affected by the earthquake and it was very difficult to find blood. I have recovered now and I can't wait to make my first blood donation. I hope the Red Crescent doesn't sell my blood for money like it sold earthquake tents during the earthquake. I couldn't enter my house for 2 months, my house collapsed and I was going to take shelter in a tent, they offered to sell it for money. I didn't accept such a thing and I have been living in a rented house for 2 years. Thank God, my financial situation is good. Those in need can use my blood free of charge. My right is halal ❤️

The earthquake was devastating to you and so many others. It's no surprise that there was a great need for blood due to all of the injuries.

Since you have Type B blood, you could have received blood from anyone with the same blood type as you, if it was available, but receiving Type O blood was also fine.

There's a blood property called Rh. You are either Rh positive (so your blood type is B+) or you are Rh negative (so your blood type is B-.) If you are B+, you can receive blood from anyone who is type B+, B-, O+, or O-. But if you are B- then you can receive blood only from people who are type B- and O-. In other words, people who are Rh positive cannot donate blood to people who are RH negative.

There are similar rules for who your blood can be given to. If you are B+, your blood can be given to anyone who has blood type B+ or AB+. If you are B-, your blood can be given to anyone who has blood type B+, B-, AB+, or AB-.
