MacRumors Forums is approaching its three millionth post. To celebrate, we are having a contest to create imitation Apple ads as graphics or videos.

Winners will be chosen in two categories:
* Best Apple Print Ad
* Best Apple Video Ad

The contest description and rules provide the details and explain how to enter.

The MacRumors Forums reached one million posts on August 23, 2004 and two million posts on December 23, 2005, 16 months later. Now, after only 10 months, another million-post milestone approaches, expected within the next few weeks.

Thank you to all of our members and visitors for making MacRumors an increasingly popular Internet destination, one of the premier discussion boards for Apple news and rumors, and a place to get or give useful advice and assistance.

Only 50,000 posts to go, congrats Macrumors 🙂

PS. <snip> (should read the other thread before asking questions)

Yes, the prizes are of great value. See the contest description.

It would be a nice coincidence if we hit post number 3,000,000 on October 23 (note the days of the two previous milestones), but it's unlikely to be that soon.

It's not that many posts, especially since you now have a contest on 😀 Too bad I'm not anywhere near my regular machine...maybe I'll try for the print ad, that'll be fun 🙂

How do you find out the total number of posts?
There are a few ways. You can point at the Reply button for any post and look at the status bar to see its post number.

You can get to the newest post by going to the New Posts page and clicking the Go to last post icon
lastpost.gif
for the first-listed thread.

You can also see the newest post at the top of the Forum Spy page, and its post number in the status bar.

I wonder how many C2D MBP ads we'll see.😀

Probably a few... I have an idea for a whole ad campaign for the new MBP. It's very creative... It makes use of familiar cultural concepts like The Invisible Man and the second coming of Jesus, possibly even an end to violence in the Middle East... If I get on it, I can have the first ad done by next Tuesday! Oh, wait...

I probably missed this in the rules, but can we work on this with other forum members? Like me and amacgenius, a local forum buddy to me?

Congratulations in advance, MacRumors!

Then again, I have to say that I am very disappointed. According to my calculations we should have hit 3 million back in May... 😀

Oct. 23 is also Weird Al Yankovic's birthday. IMO, it would be fitting if a contest to make a good Apple ad parody ended on the same day that Weird Al, king of song parodies, was born!

We'll have to see if there's some sort of coordinated deleting going on so that the 3,000,000th post arrives on 11/23 then. 😉

Unfortunately 😉 that wouldn't work. Deleted posts still count. Note that the Mac Forums Statistics counter on the main forum page doesn't include those posts, so it's well behind the maximum post number.

Well then, I guess we'll just have to post like mad. 49,491 posts to go. 😀

It's interesting, though, that deleted posts count. Is it just simpler to monitor that way since otherwise you'd have the potential for several "winners"?

So it's possible that the 3,000,000th post might be a deleted post! Which I assume would mean MacRumors would/could not link to it to show people what the milestone post was. We'll have to hope people are on their best behavior. 🙂

I always think about what Apple would do if for one of their contests the winning downloaded song had an expletive in it. Would they choose another song, just "forget" to mention the title of the winning track, or just be forced to announce the title of the song with the expletive partially deleted as it is listed on the store?

I assume this is because there is still a record of the posts in the system, so they still need an identifier. We just can't see them.

Can't Wait!

This should be fun to see all the entries!

We'll see if I can find the time for one of these! 😀

If I were in charge of that decision at Apple, I would name the album title but not the song, or vice versa, in press releases. Still, if it was "Kill the Poor" by The Dead Kennedys (from the album "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables") or "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" by Marilyn Manson (from the album "Antichrist Superstar"), it would be less than ideal for publicity purposes. And there are lots of worse examples, which I won't mention.

If the 3,000,000th post turns out to be full of personal insults, profanity, and trolling, we'll just have a moderator change the content to "Golly gee, I sure love MacRumors, don't you?" 🙂
