Hi,

We've enabled video uploads on the MacRumors Forums. Especially with the discussion surrounding iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur, being able to upload short clips of videos seems like it would be a welcome addition.

We've avoided video upload in the past for a few technical reasons. Specifically, transcoding video wasn't well supported in our software -- which could mean an inconsistent experience. Either broken videos or video downloads that are too large.

We have some technologies in place that should fix that.

- Upload videos using the normal Attach Files function when posting
- Max file size is 100MB at the moment.
- Videos will embed immediately, but it may take a few minutes before it will be properly streaming. This is because it might take a few minutes for the video to be properly transcoded.

Let me know of any issues you might run into or compatibility issues.

Consider this is a test/trial period. We may have to adjust depending on technical issues we might run into.

Saw when you were testing this in the test area (happened by just after you uploaded something). It's pretty handy to have local video, I'd keep it small like you've currently spec'ed. Does the system use an external transcoding service like AWS Elastic?

Nice! I knew I should have been capturing some of the funnier glitches with screen recording.

Makes sense.... everyone needs to see videos on the new OS..

Crazy question, but what does FOSR stand for on the banner?

This feature has far-reaching possibilities. New users don’t need to rummage through forums, they may be able to gain faster access to help and how-to information from how-to videos. Old-timers don’t need to scratch heads trying to understand the problem and such when discussing issues with hardware and software and come to a resolution faster. A new paradigm of how MR is used is upon us. Thanks @arn.

When enough videos are tagged and available, probably a new section of videos could be enabled, with labels such as ‘how-to’ and more.

@macintoshmac - love the ambitious vision. There are some limitations with how attachments work right now that might not make that quite as easy (you can't really re-use attachments)... but I have some things that might help.

I'd like to upload some very short HDR, 4k Video for the XDR Pro Display Owners Thread.

It took some time but I have some good clips that would be helpful to post links to. I can trim them to under 100MB, though they will be quite short.

If I upload an HDR 4k .mp4, will the file be transcoded or simply recognized and saved?

So to be honest, I'm not sure how it will work. Do you want it to be transcoded or do you want to link to raw files? I'm not sure the player/transcoder supports full 4k streaming if that's what you are going for.

But... right now, if you upload a video and don't "insert" it into the post, it will just be linked like an attachment to the raw file. (though there is an odd bug in how it shows in Safari when you click on the raw link).

Here are a couple of early live examples:

I'd want it to not be transcoded. Since the video is kind of special--I think I have to use a command-line tool to trim it without possibly corrupting it.

The goal is to have people who have just bought the XDR be able to view video that shows off the display without having to stream from Youtube or go hunting. It is just right there.

Right-click, Save As is the goal so I think I can just not embed it.

gotcha. We may change that behavior. I’ve seen people attach but not embed video, so I thought maybe we should force embed.

for your purpose...id recommend zip-ing the video and uploading as an attachment. That will guarantee that it will be downloaded, no matter what we change going forward with regard to video.

Okay, cool. Yes, then one or more zips make sense. Is the max file size on zip also 100 MB? I didn't see the type / size restrictions in help center.

Ah you’re right there is a different limit for non videos. Hmmm. Let me think about it.
