If a business changes it's name it has to look at what it took to build their current brand. If there is a site that is known for it's name or brand then it's not a great idea to change it. Apple's change wasn't enough to screw with their personal brand as they didn't drop the Apple they just dropped the computer.
I wouldn't change an established brand unless I was certain the alternative was indeed a better move.
This is a very good point. I've always wondered why "Radio Shack" has been able to live with that name. They must feel that brand identity makes it necessary.

We really wouldn't have a problem with this if people would just switch to Japanese. :p Then, the site name would really have to change a bit.
... but wouldn't it be something like Maku Rumorutsu?? ;)

Ok back on topic, the "AppleRumors" name isn't a bad one to repoint to MR, but holding on to a bunch of domains just for repointing can get expensive!

Considering the URL vultures, it's a lot cheaper to hold them than to have to buy them.

Well, I wonder if part of their reasoning was they couldn't come up with anything else. "That Place That Used To Have Everything Geeks Needed But Now Only Has One Needle In A Haystack Of Bad Service, Some Cables, And A Bunch Of Useless Crap" just doesn't flow like "Radio Shack".

It wouldn't be worth the trouble to change the site name to AppleRumors. After all, Apple keeps changing its company name. We'd never be able to keep up!
