whenever I recognize a member's name in the "birthdays today" box, I usually shoot them a PM.

..if I remember to look at the box. :p

I don't like it. Automated messages are inherently cold.
Completely agree.

I do enjoy it when members recognize each other on their B-Days. Now that is cool. But an automated response ... forget about it! ;)

Besides, what happens when the automatic B-Day message doesn't get sent on time. Now that would really make someone feel good about themselves! :(

Anybody who openly and shamelessly whores for birthday greetings — particularly in this thread — will not be getting any from me... that's for sure. :D

What about people who never whored their birthday... and never received any well-wishing? :(

Awww... but if you haven't provided the date of your birthday, then it won't show on the birthdays list for that day.

Saying that... Happy Birthday! :D

*sniff* Thank you! :D

I don't believe in birthdays.

Plus, I don't believe in congratulating a birthday in the forums.

Because others might feel left out.

And this will cause resentment, friction, and perhaps aggravate a murderous rampage in a shopping mall on Christmas Eve, because the person felt unloved.

Let us be indifferent this holiday season.

I like my birthday because its just another holiday for me, three days after Christmas. It is a also another reason for me to get friends together and go out for drinks.

Now i agree with you to a point. However, i don't like the birthday cake type stuff. Just telling me Happy Birthday, buy me a drink, or going out to eat somewhere is fine by me. But then again, i don't really care about that either; its just nice to hear someone say it once every year.

One can always add https://forums.macrumors.com/calendar.php to their personal bookmarks to see the totals of birthdays occurring each day.

Maybe a PM to congratulate is in order.

I always feel left out and unloved when a public birthday message is sent out to someone else, even if it's not on my birthday date. I feel extremely suicidal and unfathomably heart-broken for those whose birthday falls on the same day, but goes unnoticed.

On my last birthday I received two identical (presumably the default VBulletin) messages from the MacNN and AppleNova forums. They were both deleted within seconds.

If another member chooses to wish me a happy birthday on the appropriate day? Wonderful, fine, dandy, fantastic, etc, and when this has happened in the past I've always replied and said thanks, it's a nice gesture. If, however, a machine sends me an invitation out because its programming tells it to, I'm unimpressed. It has all the warmth of an average winter's day in northern Norway.

Unneeded, unpleasant, and would be a waste of time to implement.

Sneaky advertising

Maybe i am sleepy, or just tired from just getting off work, but is it you birthday or something? I don't know, but if it is Happy birthday; and to the other person that had theirs yesterday [can't remember who it was, sorry].

Oh, and one other thing Lacero, if i may say so you look very beautiful in that Santa hat.

Ok, so maybe i have had a couple of drinks tonight, but that [above] is no lie.
