You've got it all wrong. Nerd is very non-offensive. In fact, I am a proud nerd. Geek however, is negative.

Not exactly. Both can be used in a positive or a negative way. But usually a nerd is someone that's more socially awkward and weird than a geek. A geek is just someone that knows a lot about a certain topic (not necessarily computers).
From the dictionary:
nerd: a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious
geek: a person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest : a computer geek.

^^ I love it when people see someone using Word like a pro and they go "oh, he's a hacker!" The ones that equate any computer prowess with being a hacker. Like the dumb girl in Jurassic Park

I've always thought nerd less desirable, but I think it depends on context and time period; There are people - you, for example - that look sharp, dress nice and are pretty cool but defy the traditional title "geek" or "nerd." Then you have people for whom Geek or Nerd is derogatory all the time. Go back even just a few years and both terms were typically negative.

lol, well where I'm from nerd is the dude who dresses in slacks and button up shirts, has no friends and does nothing but studies. No social life whatsoever. Also known as the 40 year old virgin. Geek on the other hand, is just like the definition posted above. Me, for example, I have friends and a social life, but if you ask me what a kernel is, I'll describe it in full detail. If someone calls me a geek, I smile and thank them, It's a compliment to me. If they call me a nerd, I correct them.
@anjinhamarota I've gotten that in high school when someone called me a geek for fixing their iPod. One of the teachers overheard and starting spewing some bs about me hacking the school network
