anybody know how to get a "buddy icon" of sorts on the left hand side under your name and location when you post a thread?

You get an avatar after your 500th post.

are you talking about a 'tar?
or the AIM buddy icon?

avatars are granted at 500 posts.
you can add your AIM/MSN/what have you in your profile.

no it's not, personally i like the 500 post rule, it makes you feel good when you finally get it, and you feel like your an actual MR Member then, there'd be no sense of accomplishment or seiniority(not that' i'm a senior MR member by any means) without the rule.
 
As you guys should notice, the OP wanted to know how to get the icons under the location, which you can get by adding your details in your User CP.
