I'd hate to burst your bubble but, i have the Moto z2 play with USB-c charging port, and it is in fact, thinner than any iPhone at 6.mm/.24 in. The thinnest iPhone was the iPhone 6 at 6.9mm/.27 in, the new iPhone x's are even thicker at 7.7mm/.30 in, and the XR is even thicker still at 8.3mm/.33 in. ....so your team USB-C now right?

No bubble burst. I like most people in this thread don't care much either way. If I was uninformed thanks for the correction it just shows how little I care that I didn't dig that deep. Enjoy that Moto and the bubble it came with.

twas worth a shot.

I have so many USB-C cable devices and not once has this happened to any of my usb-C cables...maybe you just have bad luck. All of my USB-C cables even the older ones work flawlessly and don't bend. The one that came with my ipad pro 11 was the cheapest quality usb-c cable that ever came with one of my devices...i mean that cable really is a cheaper quality variant but thats the Apple way (luckily I have plenty of other usb-c cables to use to charge this expensive ipad).

I use Belkin’s Kevlar reinforced cables (USB-C), and the Anker cables that are similar in design (Lightning). Both cables have significantly higher than average bend durability, which I prefer since I tend to use my devices while plugged in. I haven’t used a cable that came with Apple devices in many years. I always immediately upgrade.

Anyway, I don’t really think this is a matter of luck. Just because you haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean many or most haven’t. But to use your assertion of “bad luck”, perhaps you have “good luck” and i’m actually normal / average, or the frequency of my use and situations increases the probability of failure. Akin to durability testing which an put a cable through years of stress in the matter of hours. Why would it be a thing of “bad luck” rather than a thing of “stress”, that directly reflects durability?

I specified that the USB-C connector would bend while in my bag, not when plugged into the laptop. The latter has never happened, due to the fact that the USB-C cable presses up against the side of the MBP securely enough to reinforce it and preventing it from bending laterally. But when the cable connector is unprotected in a bag with many pounds of steel and aluminum camera equipment the connector snaps like a toothpick or gets flattened / crushed.

Conversely, when plugged into an iPad, the connector isn’t reinforced by the iPad due to the thinness of the device. So it becomes more prone to snap if the connector is lifted, the iPad is placed on an uneven surface like my bed and I happen to roll over on it in my sleep while it’s plugged in, etc.

not really bad luck, I just unintentionally put it in situations and don’t care about babying my devices.

Ultimately a hollow connector could never be as durable as a solid connector of the same material / similar thickness. That’s like saying a hollow pipe is as strong as a solid pipe of same material and similar diameter. It’s utterly ridiculous, people are just biased. I wonder if people even realize how thin the metal in USB-C connector really is. It’s like people never really looked at it.

Yes exactly. There will likely always need to be a way to physically connect something to the iPhone, if only to do a hardware reset, but something like the SmartConnector would be much better suited for that, and provide one less point of vulnerability to the elements.
I’m not even concerned about a physical connection for a restore. Apple Watch and Apple TV haven’t had a way to physically restore for a very long time (Apple Watch never officially). There’s really nothing an erase all content and settings wouldn’t fix. If for some one off reason more was needed, I’m sure apple support will have an option for that - even if it means going to a store for a loaner and sending it out (like the watch) or perhaps an internal connector that can only be accessed by opening the phone and using a proprietary cable (similar to how storage modules on T2 based Macs is handled). Haven’t needed to restore via wire in longer than I remember (and that was due to jail breaking and screwing around back in the day).

took the words out of my mouth i throw away a cable away at lease every two to three months.
Have you guys never heard of Anker? Why would you buy crazy expensive cables that break if you look at them funny? Anker’s cables blow apples out of the water. I’ve only had one of their cables die on me and that was after 3 years of use
