There are plenty, if you bothered to look. The Pentium M pretty much trounces the G4.

I'm not going to bother to search for you, but it shouldn't be hard to find some models with comparable specs as the PowerBooks. Apple's engineering should improve on existing Pentium M notebooks at any rate.

I have yet to find them. Sony's offerings, some of the thinnest on the market, start out well at 1.16" and taper towards the rear ending at 1.39" which is for their S series notebook which the cheapest starts at $1699.99, coming in more costly than the 12" PB. To its own defense, the S series does boast a 1.6Ghz P-M with the Dothan core, giving it 2Mb l2 cache, a nice spec to have. Integrated graphics with shared video memory....most other specs seem quite comparible - ports, weight, etc.
Worst of all however, its just plain fugly

I see your point, there are other offerings out there but I don't think any come anywhere close to threatening Apple as having the most asthetically pleasing portables on the market.

:D

ITS NEARLY TIME!!! YEY!

On a slightly less over excited, gnawing my hand off front, the macrumors homepage has now been set to redirect to the live site...which probably means there wont'e be anybody on here now to reply to me :( I'm sure I'll cope.Now...*Breathe Andy, breathe*

It's there for you to read the updates as they happen. If everybody was allwed to say things, it would get very confusing. Just sit back and read.

it is odd the forums aren't down. I am waiting to see the apple store go offline.

I completely agree with you there. But Apple switching to x86 doesn't mean they will suddenly start making ugly notebooks. ;)

I don't know the technical specs of the x86 and G4 mobile chips to know how thin Apple can make a Pentium M notebook. But I am guessing they can come very close to current sizes, and probably at equivalent clock speeds. So instead of a G4 1.67, there might be a 1.67 Pentium M notebook. And from what I understand, such a notebook would be a lot faster.

I also don't know the details on power consumption, which produces more heat, etc. But the battery life of the Pentium M notebooks has been pretty good (at least far improved over previous generation Pentium notebooks.)

To me it's not a question of current Windows notebooks vs. Mac notebooks (IMO Mac wins regardless of CPU), it's of Pentium M Mac notebook vs. G4 Mac notebook (being that G5 notebooks are apparently still not imminent.)

Our plan is to keep the forums open during the keynote, if all goes well. Discuss what you hear and enjoy the keynote!

Note: Don't repost the news that appears at macrumorslive.com. Presume that other forum members are seeing it. And rules against one-word posts and other spam remain in effect.
