I just got my update of FCP3. I am inpressed by many of the features.

The "realtime" renering" is not on everything. But it is on the simple stuff, and does speed up the work. I havn't explored all of it yet. But it has breathed a bit more life into my G4 400. But if I keep doing more work in Video I will have to get a new machine. I can only go for so many coffee breaks as I wait for rendering. :)

As for my parents HP which the sales man told them could render right out of the box. (see earlier post) ...it is still sitting on their desk aging. It has yet to edit even a minute of tape. (something to do with the analog input. and he has requested that I come over and help him fix it....damn I thought I could get out of it and pass it on to my brother who actually likes working on PC's)

alienware

agreed keneda. I was actually thinking of building a cheap athlon based alienware box for 3d rendering. If apple doesnt come through with a G5 or insanely fast G4 i just might do that...

I want one of those too. Except they seem overpriced. Mind you, they look pretty good...

Macs in CAD??

Hi
I normally work with CAD on my projects, using PC`s for some 8 yrs now. Has anyone here had some experience using recent Macs with CAD software like Microstation or Archicad??
At the moment I am deciding to get a Mac, maybe it is the right time. Althought I have not used a Mac I used a Newton for a long time, the best computing equipment I have had so far.
Regards

oh, please, for PC you have at least 5 times the applications you have for macs, and if you use kazaa or morpheus you don´t even have to pay them.ofcourse, you can´t run morpheus or kazaa. FCP it´s ok but has nothing to do with apps like speedrazor 2000x or incite. it´s more like: "my first video editor". just check on the net some serious work and you won´t find any made with a mac. check the gorillaz videos on passion pictures, or the guys that made the movie final fantasy, or the making of driven...you´ll find that those projects were made with cheaper systems than yours.bye.

Archicad 7.0rev2

I am currently the techie/junior draftsman for a small Architectural office running nothing but G4's (see the brag about hardware thread) and Archicad native on OS X.1.2. It's extremely tastey. We have some very large houses (20,000-40,000 Sq. Ft. residences) with all the bells and whistles that do photorendered "spinnable" quicktime VR models in less than 2 hours on the dual 800. One complaint: Graphisoft hasn't really got the OS X port down. There's an obscure memory leak related to massive renders that accumulates over several weeks. Graphisoft also hasn't got the "rendering in the background" thing down. I'm actually a bit pissed at them. It runs beautifully in classic tho and is, as such well worth it. We can do things no Autocad firm could match.

what apps would those be?

Unregistered-"oh, please, for PC you have at least 5 times the applications you have for macs, and if you use kazaa or morpheus you don´t even have to pay them"

Well the truth is that who the hell needs 5 times the apps if you have all the apps that you need. Sure we don't have uncle bob's dv studio creator but guess what, we don't need it.

kazaa or morpheus? Come on. Have you ever heard of hotline, Carracho (oh whoops, sorry you can't use Carracho), Gnutella? Hmmm sounds to me like our Unregistered friend here has that age old delusion of more is better. More isn't better; better is well, better.

What was used to create the star wars trailers, many espn pieces, and walking with dinosaurs? Yeah that's right, FCP 2. Cheaper systems than mine? I have a 2 year old g3 powered laptop!

PC Idiots

All of you that say that the mac can't even go up against its "PC" bretheren you are sorley mistaken. For one thing video editing and rendering on a PC take nearly twice the time then on a dual 800, and video graphics will also blow your aging PC's out of the water. Yet even with all of this wonderful evidence there are still people who are blinded by the mhz myth where your brains are simply too underqualified to learn a simple thing like this.

IT IS MY ADVICE TO ALL OF YOU INCOMPITANT PC USERS OUT THERE GO BUY A MAC BECAUSE IT IS THE WAY OF THE FUTURE.

Ok I have to rant on this one. I was talking with my roomate about the new iMac and I made the comment that it was a consumer electronic device with the power of a computer. And he was like well what do you mean by computer?
I was like well it has storage, I/O, memory, general purpose CPU...lets see that sounds like a computer. He went off on this whole rant about how the power of a computer is determined by the amount of software available to it

Jesus here we go......

Just ask him this. In any practical scenario, what can he do with a PeeCee that can't be done on a Mac. Besides Gaming. I have a $200 gamecube that blows any PC under 2 grand away. Here's a list of stuff I've been given.

Transfer files to a PC.

What the hell are you gonnna be tranferring? .doc? Guess what you can.

CAD design work?

I've used AC2000 and Archicad. They are very comparable.

Download music?

If limewire ain't got it then chances are it ain't out there.

Guess what kids.... The unthinkable abomination has come to pass. Satans gettin pelted by Imps with snowballs right now cuz Macs have a great library of software! So what if a P4 will render 7.3% faster. Get about 4 hours into that render and let the damn thing have a magical fatal error and see how far ahead you are then. And all these people saying their PC's don't crash? 2 words. BULL ****. I don't care if you are a pro user or Bill Damn Gates, your PC will crash. Don't believe me? Watch the screen savers a bit. Their PCs crash frequntly. And they're always restarted and checked before they go on air. I have been running OS X for 3 months and neither of my machines have even hicupped. I reboot maybe once a week. MAYBE.

And don't you PC users act like we don't know what we're talking about either. I and many others used PCs exclusively for many years and KNOW what they do and don't do. I won't say Macs don't crash because they do. BUT, every time my Mac has crashed it has been my fault, and believe me I had ****ed up bad! And another thing, when you force quit in X guess what.... IT REALLY WORKS! You don't force quit and then for some reason the whole damn OS locks down and crashes. The app just quits and you go on about your business. (And for those wondrering, the only thing that I have EVER force quit in OS X is MICROSOFT Explorer. Go ****in figure, lol).

I just get tired of people acting like we have never even turned on a PC, and don't know what we're missing. GUESS WHAT? I've used PCs and I know all about them, and I know that I ain't missing a damn thing.

Thank you and good night,

Crotalus Horridus

I suggest you get a new iMac

turn it on and play your MP3's with iTunes
Burn DVD's
play with iPhoto
surf the web
make a movie with iMovie

He will learn that multitasking is no longer holding the magazine with
one hand and .........

Good point. The Mac does have some software advantages. But still. It bugs me that I could buy a $700 Dell system packing a 1.4GHz P4 (inefficiencies or not), 128MB of RD-RAM, a 20-gig HD, a floppy drive, a CD burner and a 15" or 17" monitor (forget which), where the best Mac I can get for that price has a 10-gig HD, 128MB SD-RAM, CD-ROM (no removable media of any sort), a 15" monitor and a 400MHz G3--a 2 1/2-year-old processor.

Total Cost of Owership...

'nuff said

On another note. Earlier today, I did the following on a G4 867.
1. Ran multiple OSes (Mac OS 9 (Classic), Mac OS X, DOS, Windows 98, Unix, Windows ME) at the same time!
2. Ran IE and played the new iMac video in QuickTime from IE (at the same time as 1.)
3. Ran the TweakWave demo, with real time Open GL rendering (while the QT movie and VPC was still running).....

Now find me the Windoze PC that can do all that at the same time!

I no I have posted some negative stuff about PC's, its just well....I don't feel like learning how ot always tweak them.

to those that do and like to tinker with their boxes...good for you. Stay with your PC it will give you much tweaking in the future.

to the "unregistered" who says more is made on a PC in video....well he probably is right. Macs were a bit slow to get into Video in a big way since they didn't support PCI cards until recently (relatively) they lost out as card manufacturers established good client bases with the PC market. plus the market is MANY times larger.

Not to say that the current Apples can not compete. It is actually quite a coup that Apple is doing so well in invading the movie/tv/video produciton.

PC's never had that level of "invasion" into the DTP feild even though their machines are very capable of doing DTP. As far as I am concerned Apple still rules in DTP.

But in video it is not that solid who is in control?

But when it comes to consumer level... there is NO way I can recomend a newbie or novice to computers..that they should get into PC video editting.

I leave that status to the ubber geeks.

What this all boils down to is that PC's have a speed edge over Mac's. They usually do (forget those stupid "contests" Jobs does).

The question *here* is 'Why do people use Mac's if PC's are so superior?'

You guys know why. It's the flow. Macs fit like a glove. The non-headache factor keeps us hooked on our machines. That is to say, PC's are just a pain in the neck to manage.

Allow me to rant. Hrmm-hrmm. You get all these so-called PC tech wizards that go about trying to fix their precious PC's all the time, when to us Mac fanatics, those guys look like a group of dislexic blind men toggling a bunch of switches they have absolutely no idea about, and then declaring the machines fixed when they don't crash! Macs? Reboot. Fixed. Hey, I'm a friggin' genius!

Anyhow, my point is that Macs could run at 500hz or 10hz, but so long as it does the job well, we'll all be happy.
