I want to have audio from my Mac play through the stereo. Can both products do this? Which should I buy? I don't care about video today but if Apple increases the resolution in the store I could tomorrow.

    802.11g or N?

Should I upgrade to 802.11N as well if I got the TV route?

Depends on how you intend to select the music. If you have your Mac handy or it is just playing stuff all the time then Airport Express, I was quite happy with that.

It is a lot easier to select music using iTunes than with AppleTV (no searching in AppleTV). So that's why I use my Airport Express for music.

I use my AppleTV mainly for photos, and also for videos (ripped DVDs) and video podcasts.

    So - buy both :)

    Cheers, Ed.

I use 802.11G and it streams ripped DVDs in H.265 (at 3Mbps) no problem at all. The only issue arises when someone else in the house starts hammering the wireless, then you can get some jumps.

For music 802.11G is fine, 802.11B works, but can get jump now and then.

I'm thinking of going to 802.11N on a separate network side by side with the G just for video streaming.

    Cheers, Ed.

If you have a compatible phone or PDA, consider Airport Express alongside Salling Clicker.

It rocks: view and control your iTunes library on your Bluetooth (and soon, WLAN) device, from anywhere in your house (within range of your Mac, of course).

Airport Express of course can also be used as a wireless access point and/or range extender. Of course I guess it's only a matter of time before Apple release a n (or pre-n) version - which will be nice. But g is fine for streaming music.

I say definitely AppleTV. Even if you don't like what the iTunes Store has to offer now, you can rip your own DVDs, download video podcasts or wait for Apple to up the quality. It just gives you so much more to work with in the future.

You can stream music to the AppleTV over 802.11b and video over 802.11g with no issues at all (provided you have a moderately strong signal). You can even load your music/video onto the AppleTV so your computer doesn't need to be on to play music. Best solution ever.
