[...] I got DEVONthink Pro for my digital file database and my scanner dumps all scans directly into the database. I highly recommend a setup like that. [...]

But DEVONthink Pro does not do OCR (unless you have Pro Office, at which point, pricewise for my needs, I'd be better off with Acrobat). Are you still using ABBYY or Acrobat for this need? I'm just curious how good the OCR engines under consideration here are.

Bit mediocre again. Why's it always the same software?

Civ 5 is being overpriced in their RRP estimates there. You can regularly get it on Steam with a bunch of expansions for around the $9 mark (no, thats not a typo).

The video is a plain lie. "products that are rarely discounted at all" - give me a break. Civ 5 is pretty much ALWAYS on promotion.

A prime example, its 50% off at GamersGate: http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-CIV5GEM/sid-meiers-civilization-v-gold-edition-mac

nice thing is that the bundle copy is a steam copy so you might even get a PC copy as well and can buy more expansions if you choose

I just got the regular Snapheal free the other month. $40 for the Pro version when you can get Pixelmator for less than half that.

Yeah, most of these bundles are crap. Which is why I usually only get the freebies and wait out on Humble Bundles and MacHeists.

Signing up for mailing lists of the companies you're thinking about buying software from, following their social media, and keeping their blog in sight gets you better results. You generally should be checking the Mac App Store daily too.

I know that some people would rather not spend the extra money for that one piece of software, but think about what you're doing. That $20 spent on 10 apps gets your information spread across multiple publishers, most which make countless of really crappy apps that are very niche and useless to most of us. They probably even profit mostly from selling your information since they don't make very many sales.

Wait it out for the really good deals.

I use DEVONthink Pro, not Pro Office, the mid-range solution, and they do offer an edu discount.

My ScanSnap came with ABBYY as well as Acrobat Pro 9.0 and the ScanSnap Manager. However, Acrobat is not necessary, as it is a function of ABBYY within the ScanSnap Manager setup that allows me to setup my scans to include OCR. I have found the OCR to be quite good, and surprisingly so from receipts. Whereas letters and other docs using more standard and uniform fonts are even more consistent. With DEVONthink and ScanSnap you have two options if you run the Pro Office version. You can either have ABBYY or DEVONthink do the OCR. The advantage to the latter is that you can continue scanning doc after doc and they will process, creating a backlog queue in DEVONthink. In my case since I have Pro and not Pro Office, the OCR is part of the scanning process, which means the scan must finish the OCR prior to feeding the next scan. However, this has been a non-issue for me, as I am not in the habit of feeding stacks of individual docs in quick succession. Also from what I understand the OCR in DTPO creates a larger file on average than does the OCR through the ScanSnap with ABBYY. Another nice feature is that ScanSnap allows you to set multiple profiles so you can set for Color and B&W scans to control file sizes, as well as Simplex and Duplex to avoid backs of receipts or legalese on the rear of statements. I also have a no OCR profile for scans where I don't need searchable text.
