They were a place to see cool hardware that you'd never see otherwise. I remember in about 1990 Radius had a booth and in one corner had a Mac IIx with six NuBus video cards in it, each driving a 19" color monitor. The six monitors were in a vertical rack and they had the screen saver Pyro running on it. The firework animation would shoot up through all six displays and blow up on the top one, raining down through all of them. About $40,000 in hardware showing a $20 screen saver. :)

I distinctly remember PowerComputing's booth from 1998 (?). Still have the t-shirt somewhere. The employees were dressed in commando soldier outfits, IIRC. They were creating so much excitement on the floor. Nearby Be was blowing everyone away with their demoes of BeOS multithreading. The video on a rotating cube trick was jaw-dropping. You could hardly even walk by the big Motorola PowerMax booth without having them throw a t-shirt at you. I was in a couple of meet-up groups, including one from MR. Fun times.

IDG today announced plans to put its annual Macworld/iWorld Expo on hiatus, which means the San Francisco event planned for 2015 will no longer take place. Macworld/iWorld, held annually, has long been one of the major Mac-based trade shows, dating back to 1985.

Though the shuttering of Macworld/iWorld comes as a surprise, the expo's popularity has been on the decline in recent years. Prior to 2009, Apple attended the event and used it to unveil new products, drawing thousands of attendees, but the company pulled out of the conference after 2009 and instead began hosting all of its own events.

Along with the Macworld/iWorld hiatus, Macworld also recently laid off several of its editorial staff members and shut down its print magazine. IDG's wording "hiatus" in the statement suggests that Macworld/iWorld could potentially return in the future, and the company still plans to hold its enterprise-focused MacIT event in 2015.

Why is it a surprise. IDG have canned the print issue of Macworld, now they are canning the expo. They will can the web version soon as they can't make any money from that.

I wonder if it being so close to CES had anything to do with them deciding to close it down?

Nope. It was always at that time.

Never been, kinda sad I guess, but looking at these comments, it appears to have been long coming. Just a cool thought, what if it was focused more on older Macs, not about new tech. Since Apple has their keynotes dedicated to unveiling new iStuff, we could have MacWorld show case cool old stuff. Imagine having a software demo of AppleWorks at MacWorld. Moof!

I am sad, but not surprised, to learn of the demise of the MacWorld Expo, especially after getting the notification on my last print issue of MacWorld that the magazine would be going solely digital. Not happy about that! I guess I'll not bother to renew my subscription when it expires in February.

As for MacWorld, the expo, I went just one time, back in 2006; it was my first time in San Francisco, a city which I immediately loved, and as a relatively new convert to the whole world of Macs, i got a big kick out of walking around and seeing everybody with their Powerbooks and iPods and such. I felt right at home among so many other people who loved their Macs the way I did. That was the year that Steve introduced the MacBook Pro and the iMacs with intel.....

Whoa! Wait a minute! Already my still-shiny relatively new G5 iMac (at home) and my shiny brand-new Powerbook that I clutched fervently as I carried it with me while I wandered around MacWorld and SF were - gulp! -- absolete?!! Welcome to the ever-changing world of Macs! :) About six months later I swapped out that Powerbook (sold it to a friend) for a shiny new MBP.

It was neat being able to see Steve Jobs in person and I was so glad that I had decided to go that year, as of course time unfolded and it became apparent that his future wasn't going to be so bright.

That MacWorld will always stand out in my memory as one of the most fun things I have done. Wouldn't have missed it for anything!
