Macworld Expo San Francisco 2010 kicked off yesterday with a presentation by The New York Times' David Pogue and guest appearance by actor LeVar Burton. While the Pogue keynote was a huge departure from Steve Jobs' traditional keynotes, it was infused with music, humor, theatre, and even an interview with the team behind AutoTuneTheNews (who happen to use Macs).

Best of Show

Also new in this year's Macworld was a Best of Show DEMO session held immediately prior to the opening of the show floor featuring six of the best products at Macworld Expo.

The video embedded below shows off Ten One Design's Mac software which allows you to use the MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air's multi-touch trackpad as a pressure sensitive trackpad when using a Pogo Stylus:

Impressions

The Macworld show floor was contained in a smaller space this year, but the early foot traffic seemed particularly busy on opening day. It was genuinely difficult to make your way through portions of the hall due to the number of attendees.

Impressions from both vendors and long time attendees were quite positive, given the number of visitors.

Virtualization developer VMWare was present showing off version 3 of Fusion which was released in October. Version 3 had brought Windows 7 support, Snow Leopard optimizations, and more to Fusion. VMWare Director of Personal Desktop Products Pat Lee seemed optimistic about the strong early showing at the event.

Macworld continues on Friday and Saturday, and dates for next year's Macworld Expo have been set for January 25th-29th, 2011.

Not the same without Steve...but I do agree with the way Apple is making announcements these days. Nobody would buy anything in the weeks leading up to a MacWorld.

whats up with Levar Burton?

is there some sort of freaky connection between fanboys and reading rainbow?

i was pretty sure Levar Burton became a nobody years ago. A bigger star would be someone from gossip girl or even Good Morning America.

but like I said, maybe fanboys really like to read or something.

Anyone with insight..please share.

oo and I dont really think you can look at this years attendance and conclude macworld is good to go for the future. The whole thing is still going off of fumes from last year.

inklet is now 1.1 and works now with fingers being pressure-sensitive too. You can touch firmly to hover like on a graphic tablet. I love it.

As far as LeVar Burton goes, I think they were going for the Star Trek: TNG crowd. Some of us are older than 15 and can remember that show. He's actually a pretty good actor, even if he isn't a "big" name.

As far as MW attendance, the expectations for this year's attendance was pretty low. They moved it after CES so as not to compete, and Apple already gave the big iPad announcement, so everyone knew MacWorld would be essentially devoid of anything new (except for those few people vainly hoping for MBP updates).

But their attendance numbers have turned out to be pretty good. Nothing like when Apple was attending, but no one expected that. It appears that MacWorld may actually be able to survive in it's currently reduced form for a little while longer. That's better than many expected.

But you probably knew all this didn't you? I can tell you are a troll because of your use of the term "fanboy".

Aren't you just so clever?

So the first video said the iPod would fail...

I thought Apple only was going to fail with the iPad.:confused:

With all these iName's it's getting kind of confusing.

Now when are the new MBP's coming out I need a new computer.

yes i knew about the whole attendance thing and macworld. I was just referring to how attendance the year after something leaves is not an indicator of future success. It normally takes 3-4 years for the event to be killed. In the end, it comes down to the vendors since they pretty much make it possible for the event to go on from the payment side of things. If they feel its not worth going, macworld will die.

oh star trek. yeah, totally wouldnt have gotten that. he had the thing covering his eyes for goodness sakes. and wasnt that like in the 70s?

Only in your head.

i was pretty sure Levar Burton became a nobody years ago. A bigger star would be someone from gossip girl or even Good Morning America.

My god, you're right. I'm immediately going to go home and sell all of my Apple kit because they "only" got LeVar Burton. I expect tip-top A-list celebs at my trade shows, not some has-been like him. I'm switching back to Windows, I heard William Shatner will be on stage with Ballmer.

but like I said, maybe fanboys really like to read or something.

Ahh, the f-word. How original.

You need to get out more.

Personally, as somebody who can never travel to the states, I feel this Macworld has been shut off from the internet. Where is Pogue's full keynote online? Where is the in depth mac news from exhibitors? I actually went to Macnn for the first time in years to see if they had anything but they didn't.

At least when Apple was there, there was lots of media attention. Even Engadget which is pretty anal about geek things and gadgets hasn't got even a sliver of news from Macworld 2010.

If this is the effect for not having Apple there then the whole affair has become pretty insular really.

What's with all the Levar Burton hate? He seems like a really nice guy. Wow the kids on this site are making me feel old but the last TNG movie was in 2002. I guess people under 10 would not know.
