Gaming peripheral company Mad Catz has debuted its C.T.R.L.i iOS 7 gaming controller at Mobile World Congress 2014, reports Engadget. The offering from Mad Catz brings yet another choice to the iOS gaming controller market that saw the release of the SteelSeries Stratus last month and the Logitech PowerShell and MOGA Ace Power last year.

Similar to the Stratus, the C.T.R.L.i can connect to any iOS 7 device through Bluetooth instead of using a Lightning port, and includes a spring-loaded mount that can be used with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5c. The controller itself is based on Mad Catz's popular MLG Pro Circuit Controller for the Xbox 360, and features console-style controls such as a directional pad, two analog sticks, four face buttons, shoulder bumpers, and left and right triggers. The C.T.R.L.i's Bluetooth capabilities also allows connectivity for up to four controllers.

At the current point in time, multiple games offer iOS 7 controller support, including titles like Rayman Fiesta Run, Dead Trigger 2, and Asphalt 8: Airborne. Additional developers have also pledged to build controller support into their apps now that hardware is available to consumers, as more iOS games appear to be receiving updates that enable game controller support.

The Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i iOS 7 gaming controller will be available for $80 in April, and will come in colors of black, white, red, blue, and orange.

80 dollars for a controller?!?!

That's worse that Sony and Microsoft!

Then it's just a third party controller?

COME ON NOW!.

I hope they fail until they come at a decent, respectable price point.

This is Mad Catz, they never charge like that for a controller

A falser statement has never been said.

Actually No. I play a lot of FPS games. I cannot imagine playing COD, BF, Dead Space on tiny screen like iPhone. I play it on my computer connect to TV or 27 inch monitor.

FPS on iPhone just stupid

It's a good thing then that I didn't quote the whole comment, just the part where it was claimed that bigger = better. Which is indeed false. There are genres and games that benefit from larger screens just like there genres and games that benefit from smaller screens.

I see this as a positive move that we continue to see improved controllers and their prices are beginning to come down. This is going to continue to put pressure on dedicated game devices, portable ones first, but even consoles will start getting squeezed. My guess is that portable gaming devices will take the biggest hit over the next year or two and the console will really feel it about 2 years out. I say this because as good as the A7/M7 chips are, they still cannot support console level games. I suspect that in two years, the increase capabilities of the chips (assume the A9/M9) will be very competent and capable of running console level games. And with the controllers fully matured, I think there it will be difficult for folks to justify the added expense of a console when you have it all on the iPhone/iPad that you can easily airplay to the apple TV. (and yes google will have a cheaper ad supported counter to this as well through chromecast).

Because play games on the phone with controller is pointless. If I am going to get a mobile game player, I would get PSP or PS Vita. Lots more interesting games and more comfort to use than iPhone with Mi-Fi controller.

Also I would rather playing FPS, racing games, PRG games on xBox or PS or PC. Bigger screen always means better gaming experience.

You've just done it again, declare something pointless as if it's a truism, and anyone who has a different opinion is an idiot. Just stop doing it, because it's offensive.

You can say that you'd prefer another platform (that's fine I don't have a problem with that), but to declare that a platform we choose is pointless is arrogant and makes it seem like you want us to believe that you are superior to us for your *choice* and *opinion*. Besides that, it's just plain ignorant. The controllers aren't pointless and the platform isn't pointless, so you're just wrong and offensive and your comments do nothing to progress a discussion, which is the intention of this forum.

Sorry to join the naysayers here, but I think the idea of a controller on iOS is ludicrous.

You develop a product with a touch screen and UI and then add a non-touch controller to it.

Maybe games for iOS should be iOS games, meaning that they are touch screen games and conversely, games that aren't touch friendly should be on devices that are designed to not be touched.

I am a hard-core gamer and love my controller on my PC games (another vote for X-box controllers), but not on a tiny screen.

I'm fine playing Clumsy Ninja on my phone, but for a first-person shooter I'll wait until I'm in front of my big screen with my controller.

Likewise, liking my Stratus controller a lot. Just wishing they would release the white controller stateside.

Oh and Gameloft, please update Asphalt 8 so that controllers work in menus too please? Thank you very much.

Would you recommend the Steelseries for plugging in to a TV via hdmi? Or like you mention, do most games require some sort of touchscreen input?

I tried Badland using AirPlay on an iPod touch. Not so bad (better than iPad's 4:3 ratio). But laggy due to AirPlay, and I wanted a controller.

You really didn't read any part of the article other than the title did you? ;)

As quoted:
"The controller itself is based on Mad Catz's popular MLG Pro Circuit Controller for the Xbox 360"

No I read it, it doesn't change my comment.

You'd look less conspicuous carrying around a Sega Game Gear (with TV tuner attached) or an Atari Lynx.

I don't know why these game control makers want to gouge us with these kind of prices. I think I will stick to my xbox one for gaming.

I went to the Engadget article this is based on and watched the three minute video demonstrating the device. Here are the points I found interesting.

1. The demonstrator said this is compatible with all iOS 7 devices. I still am not sure if iPhone 4 or iPad 3 will actually work, based on reports of the steel stratus controller. It would be great if it really works with all iOS 7 30 pin devices.

2. Demonstrated using an iPhone 5s inside the apple leather case, so some cases should work with this. Also the clip is fairly adjustable, so if the next iPhone goes larger, the included clip might still work vs requiring an accessory.

3. Easily removable iPhone holder (no tools) so should be easy to switch from phone to iPad controller (or upgrade the clip to a new form factor of needed.)

4. 3 colors available, black, white and red.

5. April releases, price is not final yet, so hopefully they will attempt to lower the price before release.

I would recommend it if there weren't any latency with HDMI, but there is in fact, and it sucks! I was so hoping HDMI output to be the holy grail but it's not quite there yet. Funny that you mention Badlands. It was the game that I tested on my LED display just to find out the latency makes it disappointingly unplayable. So I just stick to playing on my iPad paired to my stereo system with Bluetooth audio. The Stratus controller however is excellent. I have small hands so I love the miniature form factor. It's incredibly portable yet functional.

I'm not sure if most games supporting MFi controllers still require touch input. I'm still going through my library testing them out but it seems so far that Asphalt 8 is the only one that went half measure on that. As you can imagine, it's quite annoying to have to switch between input methods.

neat... head-up display kind off..

You get those hardware devices that clip on and now you have a full controller with the iPhone on top...

I would still prefer the clip on..... I wonder how strong the holder is ?

It's really that bad? Ug. Well, that cancels my plans to buy a MFi controller and AV cable.

Some people continue to be impressed with lightning, but it seems like an utter failure. Commercial "success" in that it's packaged with successful products, but handily beaten by it's predecessor in nearly all regards that matter to people.

Let's build a proprietary port protocol that ignores audio out and video out, you know, the reason that people tend to plug stuff in to things. While we're at it, let's waste half the pins on a half-baked reversible connector and require costly amplifier chips and software to do anything. Let's slow down development so our own first party dock is a year late to the party. Lastly, despite it being reversible, let's make it much harder to plug in. Don't forget to hype expectations so high that we're bound to it for a decade. Sounds like a party. I'll bring the hummus.

This from the company that gave us MagSafe. We would have been better off with just a nice charging cable LIKE MagSafe, and handle all data wirelessly (though that's not ideal for a plethora of reasons). See Nexus 7 2012's pogo pins, or other wireless situations.

If Lightning can't keep up with us today, what's it going to be like in 10 years?

Hate to say it, but the android microUSB and MHL humpers were right. Especially when they finalize the reversible version. If it's relative sturdy and easy to plug in, game over (for this particular feature comparison)
