i love it when someone rants about Apple R&D when it is a marketing thing that requires very little engineering. What? Programming the laser engraver is gonna prevent the release of the G5? A whole new program management team was formed to figure this out, preventing the dual processor Powerbook from being released next march? 10.3 delayed because the Coldplay and Shaquille O'Neil iPod took up two engineering teams?

Anywhoo. If Microsoft did this, they would have laser engraved mice with the Monkees on it and a picture of Ballmer.

Just imagine the return on investment of this limited ed. thing....I'll take two madonnas and a beck pleez.

To the contrary...

Am I the only one who thinks this is much too cheesy for an Apple product?

I'm a bit embarrassed by this. What's next, a flower power Brittany Spears iPod?

These are lame.

Why don't they drop the price and put in a bag full of sticker with your favorite artist in it. Then you make the choice, like in a real democratic world. Maybe I'm just making this statement because I know the're will never be a iPod with Carter USM on it.

nah

I actually think it's not even worth the money.
bah
you are stuck with an ipod with some goofballs name on it.
Try selling it when it's used.....
(and when there is a new version)

One word:

WHY?!?

More words: but hey, it a free country, and the market will say whether this was a good move. You've got to think Apple did some "focus group" research and determined this was a money maker.

Judging from the codes on the order review pages, I think there may still be more to find, or at least they considered others:

IP00008 - Beck
IP00009 - Madonna
IP00010 - Tony Hawk

IP00012 - No Doubt

Tips For Looking

For people trying as hard as I am to find other iPod engravings, here's the best piece of advice I can give.

No Doubt and Beck are both under Interscope (one of which is specifially handled by Geffen). Madonna is Warner. Read into that what you want, maybe Apple signed deals with the labels and not the artists. I went down the Interscope roster and tried different variations, but nothing. Oh well. Good luck, and find me some better ones than those 4!

Not sure if it's relevant, but No Doubt, Beck, and Madonna are all members of the Recording Artists' Coalition.

Image Locations

If anyone knows how to download all images in one directory, the directoy of the iPod promo pics is http://www.apple.com/storenews/promos/ipodb/images/ or

http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/81fdbe02272553/www.apple.com/storenews/promos/ipodm/images/
The pics are named <name>ipod.jpg, i.e. beckipod.jpg
Good Luck!
<edit>I've just noticed that it's not this easy :D
Every artist has an own directory, with ipod and the first letter of their name... So for Beck, it is http://www.apple.com/storenews/promos/ipodb/images/ , for Madonna there's a m ...
So basically, the directory is http://www.apple.com/storenews/promos/ or http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/81fdbe02272553/www.apple.com/storenews/promos/

I see a whole lot of moanin' and groanin' about how cool it is or isn't and not a whole lot of sleuthing. It's not whether you like the idea or not it's whether you can find the hidden pages.

Come on folks, find the other artists.

You don't get it, do you? These aren't just anybody's name, they're names of artists, groups, or celebrities. While it may seem a little silly to pay more for one, they're more like collectors items. If you keep in in mint condition, or don't even open the box, then they'll be worth much more, since Apple is only going to make so many of them. I like my 10gb iPod just fine, with no laser engraving, but some madonna, beck, no doubt, or tony hawk fans would probably think that it's cool to have these names on their iPods...

That's a good start, but Apple's servers don't allow you to go to the directories, so I went and got a file from the Madonna page that is on every page

I've checked all the single letters of the alphabet, no luck there. Then I got as far as 'dz'

Anyone care to check the rest?

Good luck,

as much as i like tony hawk... why would anyone want an ipod with someone else's name? just doesn't make sense to me.

ahh well. then again, i don't "not" like the move. i mean, if some folks buy it, then sweet.

Why do some people have tatoos of the Apple logo? Or why do WE even hang around and waste our time on Mac sites talking all geek talk?

It's all about fanatics.

It's a limited market, but that's why it's a limited edition. They just have to add some more artists and they're surely on to something.

You people are making this all WAY too difficult

Jeez, people. I can't believe the lengths you're going to when the answer is right under your noses. Here's how I found No Doubt last night, and it's the same way I know that there are no other offerings at this time:

Look at all of the links to purchase on the existing pages. Take Madonna's page, for example. Here are the six links:

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=2XRDyQ9h1tY&offerid=45228.10000260&type=3&subid=0

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=2XRDyQ9h1tY&offerid=45228.10000261&type=3&subid=0

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=2XRDyQ9h1tY&offerid=45228.10000262&type=3&subid=0

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=2XRDyQ9h1tY&offerid=45228.10000263&type=3&subid=0

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=2XRDyQ9h1tY&offerid=45228.10000264&type=3&subid=0

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=2XRDyQ9h1tY&offerid=45228.10000265&type=3&subid=0

See a pattern here? Note the "offerid" code in each URL. Now, change that first code by -1; you get the last item in the Beck line. Change the last code by +1 and you get the first item in the Tony Hawk line. Add 6 more and you get the first item in the No Doubt line. But beyond No Doubt, there are no more offerings and the URL will take you to the main page of the Apple store. Ditto for numbers before the Beck line. Obviously, if there were more bands/people at the present, they would be sequential just as these four offerings are.

Not trying to be a huge jerk, but I'm flabbergasted at the amount of work some of you are putting into this when there's nothing more to be found ... for now.

A great idea

I think this is a way to advertise in a cool way. Hardcore Madonna fans will go to Madonna.com, but arent likely to go to apple.com. So a pop up ad is welcome, because it has somethnig to do with their celeb. I think it is a cheap way for apple to 1. squeeze a little more profit from the ipod 2. Advertise to a new audience in a welcome way. How much do you thnik it really costs to carve a sig into the back of the ipod? Try no more than it costs to carve my name in. They likely pay maddonna a cut of each one sold, which covers their costs.

I dont like any of the artists listed enough to want them on my ipod, but I dont think this entails a huge risk.

(and if they want to make brittney ipods, who cares? No one is making you buy one)

Can I actually load thier CDs into the iPod?

After getting stuck with some 'copy prevented' CD's I stopped buying CDs last year. There are a number of CDs out there I want to buy, but I don't want to get stuck again with un-rippable CDs. It's prevented me from also purchasing an iPod, since I'm afraid I won't be able to purchase enough non-copy-prevented CDs to fill it.
Does anyone know if the CDs of the artists (not including Tony Hawk) in these custom iPods, are actually readable in a Mac ?
It would be pretty ironic if they can't be properly ripped by iTunes.

I've never had any problems at all with copy protected CDs; even those who had a warning on em worked fine with my Mac and iTunes... I also own an iPod, and as of now, never had a single issue... so go out, get an iPod and buy CDs again, and don't steal music ;)

No freaking joke. What...Apple is TOO high brow to sell t-shirts, key chains or other swag in their stores, but THIS is ok? Give me a break. This is one of the dumbest ideas to come out of Cupertino.

Too bad Apple doesn't have an outlet store or you'd probably be able to pick one of these up in a couple of months for 50% off.

Cool Down People

You don't have to buy one, nobody's forcing you to. Apple will make profits with those LEs, especially now in Christmas Time. And I agree with the others, they will be worth more in a couple of months, because they are just colletor's items. It might not be typical for a computer company to offer stuff like this, but then again, they didn't promote it on their site, did they? It's simply a lifestyle product, and for some poeple it'll be a reason to buy an iPod, show it to their friends who bill buy some as well, and so on. And the ones who don't like this can buy a regular one or one with 'I love Mom' or something else on it... it's all your choice, but for Apple as a company, an excellent way to gain customers and make money.

I would say youre right... with the missing 11... but its not there. i was playing with URLs, and it goes up by one starting with the first Beck to the last No Doubt... but there is no gap between the Tony Hawk and No Doubt... Curious.

aren't they in Target or Best Buy already? and windows versions?

hey it is christmas, buy one for the Madonna nut in your family.
Apple is milking it for all it is worth while it can, and probably clearing out units before it launches a new version next January. Same as they did with the original form iMac, first basic, then colours, patterns, new features, but the basic form stayed the same. 5,000,000+ units later . . .
people who would buy a madonna version probably won't be too burned if a newer unit comes out soon after xmas.
