Magazine Disappointment

Put me down as another Zinio fan. The update really addressed a number of user's gripes and it's shaping up to be a great little app now. The purchasing side could do with a bit of work as it's a bit slow and clumsy but the rest of it is pretty nice.
 
Checking out the update now. I'm very happy with the faster page turns, but I still have a couple of gripes/annoyances. First, issues won't seem to download in the background. That is, I clicked on the free issue of National Geographic, got the title page, and it started to download. But if I go back to my library to look at something I've already downloaded, the NG download seems to stop and start from scratch when I open it up. Also, the button for my library at the bottom of the main screen has a little "3" icon (like you would get if you had 3 text messages or 3 games waiting your turn in Words with Friends), but I don't actually see that I have anything to update. Am I missing something?

(But really, other than these annoyances, I think Zinio is improving greatly).

The videos don't even load if there are any in the magazine.

Aw, and you just made me realize the videos don't load in my paper copies either.

The NG actually looks great in Zinio. I really liked the extra slideshows and movie content. That is exactly how I thought magazines should be presented on an iPad.
 
Did they fix the Fuzzy Page loads -

IE - You turn page and it turns fast but renders a fuzzy page that then refreshes to a less fuzzy version. Even in its final state I still find the text to be somewhat less clear that I would like.

I converted several of my "CAR" mag's to Z subscriptions -
 
Am I the only one that likes the Popular Science magazine app? I think it's brilliant. If I want to read a magazine like pages of paper, I'll just buy a paper magazine from the store. If I have to pay for a digital version, I want it to be something clever and intriguing, and that's what the PopSci version is. My only problem with it is the price - it's hard to swallow the idea of $4.99 a MONTH, and I won't be buying more than the one I bought out of curiosity because it looked to interesting. Lower the price, offer a subscription (it's coming) that significantly lowers the overall price, and I might be back for more.
 
So what's the best PDF reader for the iPad? Good Reader looks alright, but hasn't yet convinced me from the videos. Page load times.

Reading magazines would be my number one use for the iPad.

If adobe make apps why not Acrobat.

This is an inherent problem with PDF's and happens on your desktop and any any PDF reader. The speed it renders is much faster now and happens so fast you really have to look to see it.

No you're not alone, I really like it too. I've bought both issues so far and I don't have an issue with the price as I'd pay that for the paper version anyway.

I hear ya on the pricing. You can subscribe to one year (12 issues) of the paper version for only $12. A buck an issue. Yet they want us to pay 5 times that for digital? Give me a break.

I don't care for it, but I would love a properly done digital version of Scientific American (and maybe also Discovery). They have a digital subscription but it's $40 and it's just PDF. I could read it with Goodreader, but I would rather see it in Zinio, iBooks, or Kindle form. I know I can convert PDF to epub format but that doesn't always turn out so well.
 
Question, how do I get rid of SPIN, Viv Mag, Dwell, etc? It gives the option to not download, but I don't even want the option to have them. I don't want them on my iPad at all! 🙁

I emailed them this afternoon. Will report back when the mags are removed.
 
Zinio is great, especially now it's speeded up. I already had a bunch of subs on it. Ipad is absolutely perfect for this. Pages really come alive and it's the perfect site to read.

Well, apparently they don't work over the weekend. 😛

But I requested those issues be removed on Friday afternoon, and just got an email confirming they have been removed. So that's good. My library is much cleaner now.

But it's good to know that they are working on giving us the ability to manage those subscriptions. Seems an obvious oversight.
