hi. sorry for the matter of fact subject heading. I was trying to find some free magazines (figured there would be quite a few in the FREE section of the magazine app store but I found almost all of them are subscription based.

is it just me or am I missing something? if anyone knows where the real free magazines are, kindly point me in the right direction please!

also I though the majority of a magazines publishers income came from ads, then why the high per issue/subscription price!

Its that the magazine app is free but yeah .... 99.99% are gonna charge per issue / subscription for the actual REAL content.

Some offer 1 as a free trial

That's just like a lot of the "free" games. The demos are free. Although there are a lot more free games than magazines.

I guess the way to look at is that there are no free magazines in the stores. Also any other apps that are free usually have really annoying ads.

Seems obvious to me they wouldn't be free...

Besides why would they be, when for about $14 a year digital sub to magazine you enjoy is chump change. It's not like they're asking for mega money, some are $15-$19 / year....

for some people, having a "free section" would be a bit misleading no?

not trying to argue here but at least for me and my friends, it was misleading.

also there are many free magazines out there... i'm just curious if they had a digital format and if they were also free since they are supported by advertising.

i don't think i was really clear in my original post. i meant i was actually looking more for the free magazines and newspapers that were free for their physical counterpart as well.

    :D

Yeah it's in the FREE APP section. Not FREE MAGAZINE SECTION, that doesn't exist. It's a free app, seems pretty clear to me and all my friends.....

I am sure as it grows, those free magazine and newspapers you desire will bring something out. It just takes time to figure out how they can make money on it, via ad or whatever they choose....:) I am sure if you wrote your local free paper they'd take note about possibly making an app for their readers.

I wish. The Economist is $189 a year for 51 issues and that is just the ipad and online version. I subscribe to Harpers Magazine for just $35 a year for 12 air freighted print issues and full online access.

Doesn't seem to be much worth subscribing to in Newstand at least in Au.

Guitar Techniques is giving away their September issue for free. Excellent magazine too. I think a few others are offering back issues for free as well.

    Entrepenuer App is Free

Entrepenuer magazine app is free and includes everything that's in the magazine from what I can tell and it has past issues. It's amazing. Other mags---haven't tried them.

It seems like a bait and switch to me. And we can't even remove that stupid app.

The "Top Stories" section of the NY Times is free. You have to subscribe to see the other sections though.

I did the same thing. I saw all of these "magazines" for free, downloaded a few, went to read them and was presented with the only option of buying them. I guess I failed to read the description or something, but when I see "guitar world Magazine", I didn't realize it was "guitar world 'app'" and the actual "magazine" needed to be purchased.

    I Don't understand

I don't understand, why would anyone expect not to pay for a magazine? If you have to buy the physical version in a shop with money, surely you would expect to have to pay for the digital version? Seems logical to me!

    Yeah another thread about this.

General beef is that it's a bit confusing when you first see this on the app store and see the 'free' flag !

In the end if you don't want to use this app then send it to the last home screen or put it into another folder.

It is a little annoying that you cant see the price of issues without going into each app, but why would you expect them to give it to you for free?

People who can't seem to understand that the app (magazine viewer) is free, but the content isn't, are crapping up all the reviews with 1-star ratings. Extremely irritating because you can't get an accurate picture of whether the magazine is any good. All the reviews are like, "Th1s R say FREE but it cost $$!!"

I would up-vote this 1000 times if I could. I think we need a subscription only review system for Newsstand just like you can't review an app if you haven't purchased it.

I do think that the subscription rates should be clearly stated in the app description, though. Half the time I can't even figure out what the rates are by viewing the top in-app purchases since they aren't named appropriately. I don't want to have to download an app just to check out the prices.
