iPad Pro Magic keyboard backlighting not working?

Just picked up a white MKB as a gift but the backlighting isn’t working. Indeed the slider is grayed out. I am updating her software now but are there any ideas of what might be wrong? Yes I restarted the ipad But no luck.

Try removing the iPad from the Magic Keyboard, reboot, and place back on the Magic Keyboard.

How bright is it in the room right now?

Dark enough so that my iPad Pro and its magic keyboard are backlit. The issue is the slider for keyboard backlighting is grayed out — you can’t move the slider.

To clarify — my black keyboard works fine but her white one does not.

Same for mine. Take it into a dark room and it will activate. It stays greyed out in a lit room And doesn’t let you adjust.

White MKB here. Same issue. I can’t adjust the keyboard brightness at all and the slider is greyed out.

Edit: Solved. You need to be in a dark room first and open the iPad. Then you can adjust the brightness of the keyboard to zero
