Apple released 3 cases, all targeting different ranges of how people use their iPad:

1) Smart Folio (for those who want to use it primarily as a touch tablet)

2) Smart Folio Keyboard (for those who want to use it both as a touch tablet but a desktop experience when it comes to typing)

3) Magic Keyboard (for those who want to use it more like a desktop all around)

Pick what’s best for you! There will be compromises, but that only makes room for their own advantages for each one
I’ve had experience of all three of these cases now…
- had the Folio keyboard initially, and it served me well with my 2018 12.9 for 2 yrs (I’ve had previous versions since the first iPad Pro in 2015; it’s always been a very handy accessory). It was a great ‘better than touch screen‘ keyboard when out and about; but no lapability and a mediocre typing experience vs. A macbook
- picked up the Magic Keyboard last year and have used it daily since - it’s transformative. Super easy to rip the iPad off the keyboard and use it as a tablet for reading etc. It’s formidably priced but a genuinely excellent accessory that means my 16in mbp hasn’t left my home office desk for about 6 months
- picked up the smart folio yesterday because I really like the mallard green colour and thought it might be a nice companion for when I don’t want to attach the Magic Keyboard. Honestly, of the three accessories, this is the one that feels overpriced and after 24 hours of experimenting I can’t see myself using it, so it’s going back for a refund. If I want keyboardless, I’ll just use the iPad naked; and I’ll use the MKF as a daily carry.

They’re all decent, expensive, high quality options - I think if you go for the one you really want, you’ll be happy. I can’t really see anyone needing more than one of them.

I personally have no use for a MacBook, and I love the versatility of an iPad. I keep it docked 100% of the time since it’s the 12.9”, but it’s my main computing solution, so that’s a good reason as to why. I like using touch about half of the time and the trackpad the other half and having an actual keyboard that is fan freaking tastic is great. I don’t usually use it in tablet mode at all and I like how when it’s docked on the Magic Keyboard the screen is closer to me on say a Brydge Keyboard, a MacBook, or even a 3rd party keyboard. I don’t find it cumbersome to use on my lap at all. I sit in a recliner when I use it at all times, so I never put it anywhere but on my lap. The Magic Keyboard has enhanced and made my experience with the iPad Pro even better than it initially was, and that’s a great thing in my mind. It’s not for everybody, but it’s definitely for me.
