When the iPad Pro is connect by magnet to the magic keyboard is there a way to put the iPad asleep from the keyboard? Or just or do you just have to wait for the time out?

If you mean pressing a button on the MKB to sleep the iPad, no. You have to just sleep it with the power button on the iPad itself.
What if you shut the magic keyboard with the iPad attached does that put the iPad to sleep?

Command, control and Q together locks the iPad without shutting it in the keyboard.

Yes. You just close it up and the iPad sleeps.

And your hotspot connection is still active, if using or needed.
Do I need a screen protector? Just didn’t know if the keys could scratch the iPad when it’s closed

The 11" iPP with MKB, never did scratch. The keys aren't close to the screen like the Smart Keyboard Folio is.
As @alexcue states the screen never touches the keys. The keyboard is recessed into the bottom of the case and there is a raised border or lip that prevents the screen from contacting the keys. Kinda like the lip around an iPhone case that prevents the phone screen from contacting the surface when you place the phone face down.
