This is pretty absurd - the keyboard costs $300. I keep it clean and wipe it down regularly, yet the keyboard case itself has started to yellow. I have no clue why and I don't think anything can be done to "fix" this.

Why would a $300 accessory start to turn yellow in less than a year? Just seems absurd to me.

I was planning to get the white Magic Keyboard whenever I decide to upgrade my current iPad Pro, but some anecdotal accounts like this have me second guessing...

The discoloration seems to be concentrated on areas that probably see a lot of contact with other surfaces. Does it often sit on a lightly stained desk, do you slide it in and out of a leather backpack, or does it regularly touch/brush against any other surface that could be transferring color?

Honestly it sits in the same spot for most of its life. Doesn’t travel all too often. It definitely looks like it’s from the sun but it doesn’t sit in the sun directly, ever. Strange.

I did end up speaking with Apple today and they are mailing me a replacement free of charge, even though I don’t have Apple Care and it was just outside the one year warranty. I sent them the pictures and the specialist I spoke with worked some magic for me. Pretty thankful for that!

I just noticed my white magic keyboard has some lines on it. They seem to line up with my 11” iPad’s folio case (lavender).

I maybe occasionally lay my 11” on the magic keyboard on my desk, but never did I expect the color to transfer to the other!

I tried a bunch on things (water, isopropyl alcohol, magic eraser, nail polish remover), and nothing is taking off the marks.

Frustrating as I take such good care of my devices.

For the price, its frustrating how easy it is for these things to get damaged through no fault of your own.

Discoloration no. Tears, yes. Even though it has never left the house. I had to put some leather patches on it.

My white magic keyboard still looks like new - no discoloration.

However, I have the white silicone case which I always get for all my phones. This one is for my iPhone 12 Pro and it’s the same material as the magic keyboard and has gotten like black/gray dappled discoloration on it. Came from either a black rubberized pad that the case sat on when it was charging or the pocket of my rain coat. Drove me crazy and I tried everything from bleach to Dutch cleanser to remove the staining. You know what finally worked for me? Whitening toothpaste. 😁

A 500,000$ Lamborghini in the hands of an amateur can get wrecked in an instant. Either way price has nothing to do with yellowing. Either your hands were dirty or it came in contact with your desk / w/e which caused the discoloration.

Either way, I’d be really upset if I had paid $450 (price with taxes in Canada) and this would have happened to me.

That’s really good that they’ve gone to that length to make you happy. My guess is the new one will discolor in the same way. I’ve seen any number of other white products made of similar materials discolor in the same way over time. Usually it is where there is physical contact with some surface, and in others it can be due to some environmental factor. But it is always a risk in a white case. Of course the black cases aren’t without their own issues. My Smart Keyboard folio, which has similar if not the identical material on the exterior, developed roughened areas in the area that would contact whatever surface you’re using the device on. There were many posts here with picture of those areas. Many including me installed skins on them because of this. That worked extremely well in my case and looks very good as well.

I was concerned that the same roughened areas would occur on the MKB so I applied a skin to my black one as soon as I received it, and again it has worked perfectly while looking outstanding. There are so many to choose from you can really customize the case in any way you want. Another option are the fancy cases for the cases. I consider that overkill, excessively heavy and just too expensive to bother with but many seem to be very happy with them.

white can be problematic. sometimes the material is just cheap, but also exposure to sunlight or cleaning agents other than just pure water can quickly result in yellowing.

Recently I've bought a 2005 Mac mini G4 and its power adapter's (A1105) DC cable had turned from its original "Apple gray" to dark yellowish color. No such change in the plastic parts, only the silicon / rubber cable.

In a youtube video: How to remove yellowing from old plastic (retrobright) the BEST method I saw someone immersing the discolored plastic parts into a cup filled with hydrogen peroxide (hp) wrapped in a UV-LED strip. He left the discolored parts for 2 days and after that, the parts came out as brand new, in their original color!

Yesterday I gave it a try using only the hp without the UV-LEDs. I've wrapped soft paper around the cable and diluted it with hp and wrapped it in nylon film to keep the hp wet. I covered only about 40cm of the cable with hp, to be able to compare the change in color when I remove the paper. Tomorrow I'll remove the paper and post a new photo.

UV light yellows anything white or light colored.
Might be. Anyway I had no desire to buy or use UV lights in the operation. It seemed too bulky. Meanwhile I got impatient and removed the hydrogen peroxide paper from the yellowish cable and bum! the yellow color has gone. Experiment succeded. Though it's hard to take a good photo at night, here it is:

Great news. To avoid discoloration from handling I bought some vinyl decals which cover the different surfaces of my MK. I also noticed that I was getting a line on the outside hinge because when it opens it moves downward a little and touches my table which is stained wood. To fix that I picked up some white low-profile laptop feet. They’re cheap enough to where if I don’t like them its not a big deal, but I do so far.
