To be able to see the keyboard at night...

I don't stare at my keyboard either while actively typing, but most people look at their keyboard for a starting position, or to find a specific key, or use keys other than the QWERTY rows...

For anyone who ends up working late, backlit keyboard is essential.
Come to think of it, this has never been a problem to me with my existing magic keyboard, but I was missing backlighting for my iPad's Smart Keyboard. But that's just me.

It’s a real shame that these won’t work on Intel Macs and an even greater shame that Apple isn’t letting you buy them separately even if you’ve got an M1 Mac. There are lots of M1 mini owners out there and plenty of people who use their MacBooks docked and in clamshell mode.

Oh, come on.... it’s also some kind of dandelion, lemon, creamsicle, melon color.
Dandelion and lemon is bright yellow, like a banana, not pastel like the chin and accessories on the yellow iMac.

Creamsicle and melon, in my opinion, are more orange and closer in color to the orange iMac which I quite like actually.

I would guess they're saving the black for a pro model just like they did in the past.
I would agree, Black has been the Pro color for a while. So if they introduce a Mac mini Pro a black keyboard would be nice against a Mini Tower Mac Pro unit. If they could have a Mac mini pro unit starting around $3000 compared against the $6000 Mac Pro starting price, I think they would have a winner. With the Pandemic work from home has turned around the popularity of desktop computers, more people working and schooling from home. The iMac looks nice and all for a general home computer, but someone who would like a little more power and expandability a mini tower would fit right in.

The entry level iMac is a terrible deal.... the nickel and diming for touch ID and ethernet adapter gets you close dollar-wise to the next model that included them, but you are still short 2 ports and 1 core.

with how big of a deal security is these days, there is no excuse for leaving touch ID out. They can't be saving more than $1 or $2 on the component side with how mass produced these have been by Apple over the last decade...

How do I lock a Mac with a single key press?
How much longer does it reallyyy take to quickly do “cmnd+ctrl+Q”?

Or even better yet, set up a “hot corner” in settings to when you move your mouse to the extreme upper right corner for instance, it activates the screen saver. ZERO key presses! ;)

If Apple really cared about the environment these would be included with all iMacs so people don't have to buy them separately and end up having a spare unused keyboard.

Or reduce the price of the iMac and leave out the keyboard and mouse and let buyers get what they really want -- whether that be an Apple keyboard and mouse or something else... perhaps something with a backlight?
That's basically what Apple does. The more popular small keyboard is included with all iMacs. If you pay the upgrade price for the extended keyboard, you'll get that one instead. In the past, they've done the same thing with the mouse/trackpad.

Huh, i never bothered to learn that one....

That actually is a terrible shortcut. A single modifier key different from both Quit application and from Logout. Slip on your keyboard and you get a completely different and possibly irreversible result

That's why the hot corners work like a charm.

Out of curiosity, why do people want backlight? With touch-typing I rarely ever look at my keyboard, and no backlighting means longer battery life anyway
Not everyone can stare at the screen while typing. It would be nice to have in a keyboard that whenever sold separately will probably cost over 100 bucks, and if you don't need it you can always turn off the backlighting completely.

Nickel and dime in. Touch ID has been around since 2013, 2016 on the MacBooks, what makes it so special you have pay extra for it. It should be standard at no extra cost. MBAs are infiltrating. Everyone of them should fired!
It makes the upgrade from the base model to the midrange model feel less expensive and therefore more appealing. It's part of the carrot and stick approach that Apple takes with their pricing, psycologically, so that the ASP is the $1,499 model.

I'm a devout touch typists too but there are times when the backlight is really handy, especially when it comes to the number keys up top during startup in a dark area. Logging in can be a pain without backlight.

I noticed some new keys on there? My old 2014 keyboard doesn't have any of those anyway.

Anyone found any news on what sort of keys do they use? New Scissors or Old Scissors ?

Ugly iMac with ugly keyboards colors. Jony Ives left and took his designs with him.
And on some levels good riddance! Don't forget about his 2016-2019 butterfly keyboard designs. I'm glad he's gone. Those were terrible and embarrassed Apple as a company.
