I've been using my Magic Track Pad for many years with my Mac Pro and the batteries lasted a very very very long time. But since getting my Macbook Pro, the batteries drain with a month - maybe even less.

I used to turn my Mac Pro off but leave the MBP in sleep mode. Would this cause the batteries to drain quicker as the Track pad is constantly connected?

How old exactly? Could be the battery is just old and can’t charge fully anymore. And I’m not aware of a battery health check on the trackpad or the keyboard for that matter.
I e used a trackpad for 7 or 8 years and have always kept the Mac (MacPro, iMac and now Studio) in sleep mode, only turned off when away from home for a week or more and never noticed any impact on battery life for either trackpad or keyboard

Thank you jz. I don't use rechargeable batteries. They're normal batteries. But maybe I should begin using rechargeable batteries.

The batteries I was using were brand new straight outn9f the packet. But within a month they'd drained.

oh, that must be the original one, I had that for a while but then I guess I got the "2" version with my iMac in 2017 and that has built-in battery ... no idea other than maybe a bad batch of "new" batteries? I'd try a brand name (Duracell) and double-check the date, and if the same thing happens, maybe time to get a new trackpad? Electronics don't last forever ...
