MagSafe Airline Adapter Doesn't Power MacBook Pro 17"

I have a MagSafe airline adapter (new one with the L-shaped connector) and it's worthless for my MBP on flights. The green light comes on, but it doesn't power my laptop. The battery just drains as usual.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Important notes:

Using the MagSafe Airline Adapter provides power for your computer but does not charge the battery.

I'm pretty sure it's just intended for the smaller notebooks that use less power.
