I’m almost an exclusive user of Qi wireless charging before the iPhone 12, I have standard IKEA wireless pads around the home - I put my iPhone on it before I go to bed and it’s always 100% when I wake up in the morning, even if I only have a 6hour night. I’m not sure if these are 5W or 7.5W but since I get all day battery from my iPhone 12 this overnight charging system works well for me , the convenience is nice.
When I moved from an iPhone 8 and got my iPhone 12 I was quite interested in MagSafe for travelling as it’s a bit faster on the goso I got the puck about a month after the phone.
I’ve been using MagSafe on and off and I’ve found it incredibly difficult to live with and I wondered how other people have got on with it.
My main issue with the apple MagSafe luck is that it REQUIRES very specific voltage and current to work at all. Not just for 15W, but to work at all.
In the real world USB-C is becoming more popular but when I plug the puck into these ports in cars, coffee shops, table USB-C ports in the office, even apples own iPad won’t power the puck to charge the phone… it just won’t do anything and you wish you had the lightning cable after all because at least the cable will fall back to 5W charging.
I don’t know what these USB-C ports all have in common, I think they only do 10-11Watts (5v / 2A, 9V, 1.2A). Even a standard Qi charger would work on this.
I want to replace my apple MagSafe puck for the the Belkin magnetic puck - it’s standard 7.5W Qi with the magnet alignment for a slight efficiency boost and that will work fine for me. The apple one might do 15W in some cases for a short period of time, but if conditions are not met it will do exactly 0W charging , what’s the point …
In the real world you cannot depend on this as the only thing to carry with the phone. Might as well just carry the lightning cable or a standard based Qi charger.
