I had two questions I wanted double check about… on An iPhone 12 or 13 of any variety, does the MagSafe connector attach to the phone securely enough that you can hold and use the phone normally without the connector falling off?

I just watched a video about the MagSafe cable/adapter, and was surprised to see that it almost looks like the connector will snap on to an iPhone se or 11? Like obviously it won’t line up the coils automatically, you’d have to move it around to get the right spot, but can you use it with an se or an 11 and have it attach/stay in place well enough to use it while charging?

If so, I’d rather spend $400 or $500 on a phone than $730+, but I’m guessing it doesn’t stay attached well enough

Edit: Come to think of it, I would like to get apple’s magnetic battery pack, and obviously it wouldn’t be very useful if it doesn’t stay in place well while you’re using it… So hopefully MagSafe really stays put well, even if you’re moving the phone around with a cable attached… I hope.

On an iPhone 12 or 13, they have magnets inside of them to accommodate the MagSafe charger.

If you're using the MagSafe charger with either of those phones, it will snap on and you can continue to hold/use the phone while it's charging. It can get quite warm, that's the only notable thing I can think to mention. Other than that it's as simple as slapping it on the back, and then using the phone same way you would if you were using a regular lightning cable. It won't fall off even if you pick the phone up by the cable (though not recommended).

On iPhone SE or 11 (or any generation prior) they don't have any magnets inside. This means that yes, you can rest the phone on the charger and it will charge, but the moment you pick the phone up it'll come away from the charger. Even if there's a little bit of magnetism there it'll be very weak and you'd probably end up having to physically hold the charger against the phone at all times (and make sure it's aligned property whilst you're at it).

The same applies to the MagSafe Battery Pack - you can comfortably use the iPhone 12/13 whilst the battery pack is connected. Again, it'll get warm, but you don't need to worry about alignment or the case dropping off (though it can slide around a little if you use a little force). With the 11/SE and prior, I can't imagine it'd be that helpful as it simply won't stick to the back and you'd need to plug the battery pack into the mains if you wanted to use it as an ordinary MagSafe Charger.

Cool, thank you! Sounds like this should be good enough for me to use with a 12 or 13! And I won’t risk it with an older one.

I use my phone plugged in frequently, and I’ve had horrible luck with the lightning connector, so I absolutely want to be able to use it while it’s wirelessly charging.
