So stupid that they got rid of this! I upgraded last year and within the first week I tripped over the cord and brought my brand new Macbook Pro tumbling to the ground... This would never have happened with the MagSafe.
You must break everything you own.

MagSafe was cool but having two sided charging capable laptop is bigger to me. Will MagSafe be on the back lid? Not sure if they will bring back the actual cable and improve it? So one side charging again?
I like using black usb-c braided cables. I could never replace my cables easily with a MagSafe charger. The cable also turned yellow and frayed over the years. It was 80$ to replace....

I feel like rumours like this will set is up for disappointment down the line if it’s not true. They did make MagSafe for the iPhone, but will they add another port to their design when USB C already does the trick?

Having said that I want it back as much as anyone!!

While they are at it, I hope they reintroduce the LED battery level indicator on the side, and also the white LED power indicator on the front that fades in and out during sleep mode. It was these little details that made my 2010 MacBook Pro such a pleasure to use.

I like the 2016 to 2020 MacBook Pros overall, but lacking these details, I often forget if my MacBook is in sleep mode or not. If it's in sleep mode and then stored in a case, it overheats. This is not a good experience.

Additionally, I would like Apple to place tiny LEDs inside the USB-C ports to make them easier to use at night. If they can recreate the glowing logo on the top lid that would be great too.

Putting MagSafe back will also get rid of 3rd party monitor laptop charging.

Having a dual option of MagSafe plus USBc charging will mean the MagSafe port will steal the space of another port.

Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, don’t bring that proprietary port back!

Apple led the way with USBc, thunderbolt 3, and now PC makers are finally following suit 5 years later. To go back now to MagSafe, and or usbA is a very poor decision, imo. The computer is so clean and functional now.

I could get behind an integrated camera card slot again, but not MagSafe or usbA.

Article: “The switch back to ‌MagSafe‌ is likely to be popular with MacBook Pro owners who have been missing the feature since Apple transitioned to USB-C.”

It will also be popular with MacBook Air and MacBook owners!

So while I am happy MagSafe is coming back, I hope it isn't at the expense of USB-C charging. Having one single cable to dock my laptop is awesome (Charging + display + ethernet + keyboard/mouse + external storage.) Also being able to choose either side to charge on.

Not sure that I would want MagSafe that also provided data, to easy to accidentally disconnect.

This is the main thing for me, including charging from both sides. My laptop docks at my left and plugging in on the right keeps my main cable completely out of the way.

I was not sad to see MagSafe go in favor of USB-C. My laptop spends most of its life at a workstation and having a single plug, plus the convenience of being able to use a variety of chargers was more than I ever got out of MagSafe. It seems even goofier to bring this back on Apple Silicon machines. How many people seriously require being plugged in somewhere with a cord that’s a tripping hazard on a laptop that gets 12+ hours of battery life?

If this plays an accessory role, Like with the phones, great. If my LG 5K can’t also charge these things, that will be extremely annoying.

The main problem with MagSafe in my opinion was when the cable inevitably started to fray, you had to replace the whole charger. With the USB-C chargers, the cable is detachable so you can replace just the cable.

If they can sort this, then I’ll be happy enough to see the return of MagSafe.

The problem is that it’s proprietary. There were no extensions Or anything. I had a 27” LED Cinema Display and was unable to configure my desk the way I wanted and still use the charger because... Apple. Chargers were always overpriced. I use a variety of chargers for my current MacBook. Heck, on my last trip I forgot one and could simply plug in using my father-in-law’s Lenovo charger.

I still wonder, with a 12+ hour battery life, who needs a charger in a high traffic zone? If this is an accessory piece, awesome. The people who need it or the fans who just think it’s the best thing ever can have it. Losing USB-C charging would be completely lame—and I want to say “Apple would never do that” but... Apple makes a lot of weird decisions.

Hurrà, but.... I just bought my M1 MacBook Pro.. :( I will enjoy it again in a few years

Having it optional would be best. Maybe they just make the rear Apple logo the charge port for it and you’re then just expected to attach the current charge puck there.

Maybe they’ll build it into the usb-c cable and two ports on either side. Like those removable ones you can buy on Amazon that have a little snap in piece that stays in the machine. Going back to MagSafe on one side seems like a downgrade to me now.

I don't care one way or other what kind of power port, but I do care about:

I have been holding off replacing my 2014 MBP because I want more ports & no touch bar
Next year...

I have yet to try these magnetic ones but then I hardly move the notebook off the desk these days. I sometimes think they should have just put those in the box in 2016, call them MagSafe 3 and done.

Instead we’re re-living every single hardware component that used to be better back then one at a time. Old keyboard beats new keyboard in reliability and comfort, magnetic charger comes back, Touch Bar goes away, etc.

I'd be so disappointed if they removed the ability to charge via USB C - it feels as if we're going back in time here.

Even with MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs getting thinner, MagSafe in some form was always doable. Hell, Microsoft practically has that with their Surface line and the port is thinner than a USB-C connection (plus it doubles as a docking station connector).

Like, maybe they made the chassis too thin to accomodate USB-A [though, in my opinion that means it's too thin because USB-A hasn't stopped being useful (and you're not going to sell me on the idea of spending $20-50 on a dongle, so don't even try)]. But, there could've totally been a MagSafe 3.

I'm wondering if, with a return to MagSafe, the USB-C ports will still support charging the laptop. Not all USB-C ports support charging the machine. For instance, I have a Dell Latitude 7390 that has a USB-C port that can be used for docking and charging. However, I also have an HP EliteBook 755 G4 (as well as a bunch of 820 G3s) and those USB-C ports do not support charging the laptop (but they also have dedicated docking station ports on those). So, I wonder which route Apple will take when it comes to USB-C charging on these potential MagSafe-Equipped Apple Silicon MacBook Pros.

I'm sorry that you're going to have to deal with the absence of a feature you have come to use. I hope there's a possibility of a future design that could both employ the visual and touch aid that the touch bar can provide in some use cases with the tactile peripheral control area one needs when they don't want to take their eyes off the screen.
