I don't think it's luck, I think it's proper care of the cable.

Treat it like it's a 3" diameter cable...and it will definitely be destroyed.

Treat it like it's a fairly thin, somewhat delicate cable...and it will last damn near forever.

First of all the HP one is not 3" its not even 3 cms. It is 1.5 cms, while the Mag Safe is less than 0.5 CMs.

Second, why should we have to be so delicate with it? To me this cable is not designed to withstand the pressures of being a portable electronic.

The PC manufactures get their power cords right, the cables on their laptops are far more rugged and they can survive far more abuse. They can put up with the abuse portable electronics take. Should't we expect the MagSafe to be the same? Especially since Apple products are supposed to be so much better than PC products.

It should have lasted much longer than 9 months, you shouldn't have to buy AppleCare in the first place. The MagSafe just is not a rugged design and Apple should recognize the flaw and improve it.

Meet Magsafe's worst enemy

Yes! I have lost two to this, and a further two to being chewed by pet rabbits :) none have "just" failed. I do keep separate adapters at home and office so don't often wrap them up at all but when I do I use the largest coil possible to fit in the bag I'm using, the quest to wrap it into the smallest space possible will cause issues...

The L-Shaped adapter is utter crap. There is no denying that one. I liked the old T-Shaped due to how much more flexible it was in several occasions.

Example, L-Shaped adapters do well for desk environments, but during bed or other than desk use, they are a drag. Where as T-Shaped adapters offer ease of use in bed or other applications where the adapter comes in at weird angles, or not at 90* from the port.

Interesting I replaced two of the T shaped adapters after failure in each case they became intermittent but there was no obvious damage to the cable. I have now been using the L shaped adapter for about ten months with no problems to date. My laptop is mostly desk bound.

I haven't had any MagSafe failures, but in my experience, the L-shaped ones seem to be more robust (as long as you don't try to pull the cord in the complete opposite direction (yes, the T-shaped ones gave you a pretty wide angle to bend, but the L-shaped ones often snake the cord out of the way, avoiding accidentally strain). I am curious to see how the new MagSafe 2 design holds up...

I've been through 2 chargers in the past 2 ½ years. Both of the other MacBooks in the house have had their chargers replaced as well. I don't move my charger often, normally its in one place. It comes out at 90º as well. I take care of my chargers. I think its just luck. Some people never have to replace their chargers, others replace them every year. Its not much of an issue for me, as I have AppleCare and they've been good at replacing them so far. I've only got half a year left of it, and thats when the real issues will start.
