For what it’s worth, a few tried and true case styles from other manufacturers have been having similar fit issues. I guess it’s been a tough year for design and manufacturing oversight.
My leather case for the 12PM will arrive Monday so I hope I don’t run into this issue. Will report back.
I assume you're talking about the original Apple leather case?
It wouldn't surprise me, the one I got for the iPhone X was a little off as well.
That said, the one I received for the 12 Pro Max was impeccably built and provides a snug fit.
Maybe there is a faulty lot out there, I'd certainly exchange it if it doesn't fit as it should.

Mine seems to fit well, but at first I hadn't snapped the top right corner all the way in. Once I did that, it's been fine. It's since been in/out of jeans pockets without popping out. Been using the leather case exclusively for about 24hrs now and really like it.
